What to do with Hub nuts

Hi, Had Puck L serviced last week and as usual given the used hub nuts (as proof that they had been replaced). At £9 each it seems an awful shame to just throw them away. Can they be recycled?

Tony

Not as hub nuts. They are designed to be single-use only.

Don't throw them away though - start a collection of scrap metal and when you've got a few kilos take it to the scrapyard. You won't get a huge amount for it (unless you've got any old batteries in your collection), but the money's better in your pocket than the council's, which is where it goes if you take it down the dump and chuck it in their big skip.

Hello,
I'm new to all this and not yet had my first service. What are hub nuts and do I need to make sure they are changed during the service on my 310?
Thanks.

They can be shot blasted and used as earrings

I think this discussion on Practical Caravan more or less explains it Philip.

On newer Eribas and most caravans the hubs and bearings are held onto a stub axle by a 'one-shot'
nut; this is a specially made nut with an oval thread that grips tight to the male thread by being
deformed to the round. Once it has been tightened on with a special torque wrench it will be rock
solid, but once removed it loses its grip.

Clear as mud?

Note also that the torque setting required for replacing these one-shot nuts is pretty huge at 290Nm +/- 10Nm and the average torque wrench used on wheel nuts, cylinder head bolts etc will not be up to the task.

Have a look here

At 190Nm the wheels will be falling of your wagon, Brian.

The hub nut torque for Al-Ko brakes is 290Nm and BPW specify 280Nm for theirs.

recycling, if you are a wood turner make a shaft and screw one on each end,
the next service make another and the ones after add to the other 2 all this weight lifting should ensure the water container filler upper is at full health and strength..
grabs coat quickly

So in summary we have:
save up and get scrap value - seems good sense to me
Use as earnings - I'd like to see the ears that can hold these!
Use for weight lifting - thats just sad

and some technical info that explains how they work
Thank you to all who contributed - I shall now go and have a beer!

what happened to the split pin, tighten up, half a turn back, line up the castellated nut with the hole in the shaft, push through split pin or an old nail, bend one end over, to secure nut. fill up with grease ,tap on cap, refit wheel. no problems..do it yourself no need for an expensive torque wrench you,ll never need.

My old 1993 Puck used the castellated nut and split pin.... now my Familia uses a one shot nut which caused confusion to a Mayday engineer when I had a break drum issue when I got to site, unfortunately he didn't have a Scooby -doo what a one shot nut was so I had to call out a caravan engineer to sort it out.
