CTEX MXS 5.0

Having upgraded my electrics last year (see Question for Eriba Electrical experts??) the last thing I had left to do was to replace the battery charger. I noticed the other day that the battery gets rather warm when on charge from the EHU and looked more closely at the existing battery charger. That proved to be a Shaudt LA110E and is described thus - The battery charger LA 110 E is used to charge 6-cell 12V lead-acid batteries with a capacity of about 35 to 70Ah. These batteries can also be built into 12V networks so that the battery charger Charge and supply takes over. The battery fitted is a 74Ah lead acid, so is at the top end of the capacity for the charger, so that may be an issue.

Anyway, returning to a suitable replacement, I am assuming a CTEK MXS 5.0 would be an ideal candidate for the replacement and think that one or two people here already have them fitted. I have a simple question, do they have an on/off switch? When you plug in to the EHU, do you then have to turn the charger on, or will it switch in automatically?

Apologies for the rather lengthy posting for such a simple question!

There isn't an on-off switch. Just just set it for the type of battery you're charging and Bob's your uncle.

I used this company many years ago when I bought an older unit. https://www.plymouthbattery.co.uk/type/c...2-volt-chargers When it failed at nearly 5 years old it was replaced with the newer unit you are looking at. Excellent service and at the time the cheapest I could find. [I also went for the extra lead so I can charge car battery through the 12v lighter socket]
CTEK are a plug it in and leave it intelligent charger. You will see a lot of car dealerships have them set up on showroom models.
ALDI and LIDL do a version but I am unsure of the long term performance leaving them on all of the time.

Thanks Colin. I have a LIDL sourvced one in the garage which works very well, but it has an On/Off switch, so when the EHU is unplugged, the charger will need switching on next time the EHU is plugged in. As it will be buried under my permanently made up bed in the Troll. Not something that would be convenient. Hence the attraction of the CTEK as verified by Pepe...
