'Black' stains from drain holes in roof gutters...

Just a reminder and 'heads-up' before you spend lots of SLW Tokens [Scottish Laughing Water Tokens] on the latest sooper-dooper cleaner to remove the dark marks left by water running down the side of your pride and joy [No, not SWMBO, I use Harpic...]

Morrisons have plain, ordinary, white Colgate toothpaste on offer at £1 a tube. Perfek! If your mid waist plastic trim is a bit sticky and discoloured, it will do that a power of good, too.

It will also take stains out of hot-plate stainless steel without making a shiny patch, remove fine scratches from sun glasses and spectacles, and, if you are into live model steam engines, make a brilliant lapping paste for slide valves and cylinder/piston assemblies. At a fraction of the cost of jewellers' rouge, every Eribanaut should have tube or two.

Oh!! Did I mention it is also good for cleaning your teeth and making the hair on your upper lip less obvious. Mind you, having had a full set for 50 years it would be hard -pressed to make much difference to my appearance, though when I was a 20-a-day man it would have equally well removed the nictine stain from my fingers.

They need a man like you down at Minehead. There are four full size cylinders for lapping and slide bars etc. It'll help to get her running again like this (see from 19.35 in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJH-ajfoD40) Mind it'll take a whole 45 gallon drum of Colgate.

I'm not sure I'd want to be using bleach - even diluted bleach - on the paintwork. It'll remove the black marks, but it'll also remove any wax you've painstakingly applied to protect the paint.

I reckon the paint on these vans needs all the help it can get. It's microscopically thin - much, much thinner than the multi-coat paint on a car - and it doesn't take much to damage it.

I think something like Autoglym Super Resin Polish is a much better bet. It'll remove the black streaks and leave a protective wax coating when it's buffed off.

You could argue that it's a sooper dooper something or other, but since this van cost me a whole heap of money I'm quite prepared to fork out an extra tenner once every six months or so to help keep it in good nick.

Doug,
good tip on the toothpaste. I will try it when needed on the plastic trim but will continue to use white spirit followed by a re-wax on the black water stains.

Just cleaned my stainless sink with the toothpaste idea. Works a treat, thanks. I used whitening Colgate and it's brighter than "Housewives of Cheshire"'s teeth

Hmm I just used a stronger version of the caravan cleaner stuff as advised on the container. You might like to search for the thread - 'Reducing black streaking'
