It's a French thing. Vans over a certain weight I have to be registered.

It's used by France and other countries that register caravans, without it the authorities won't allow a caravan to register and in their eyes it therefore doesn't exist.

The issuing of CofC's is gradually spreading across the globe. In the EU the Type Approval Regulations (in operation for UK caravans for about five years) require a CofC to be issued for every caravan (and motorised vehicle) produced, as proof that they comply with the Type Approval regs. Any material change to the van e.g upgraded MTPLM, requires the issue of an amended CofC.

I believe that in Germany and France CofC's were an integral part of the caravan and motor vehicle scene for decades before they became mandatory across the EU and that if a caravan has no CofC the manufacturer should be able to furnish a copy based on their records.

Sorry I assumed a Passat. Still need to know the mandatory plated weights though. They'll be on a door reveal somewhere.

Chris, on the B pillar drivers side you should find a plate with 4 weights on it. Front axle max, rear axle max, max gross weight and finally max train weight. Take the 3rd from the 4th and you have the max tow weight.
Check in your handbook and you should also find this figure. As you own a VAG vehicle you may infact find two figures relating to towing on different gradients.
I suspect your figures will be 1500/1200kg or 1400/1200kg, so towing a 1200kg Triton would be fine.
