I was asked this same question on Friday by a friend who has just taken up motor caravanning.
When I checked a typical microwave, I found that it was rated at 800 Watts meaning that it will draw only 3.3 amps and therefore will be safe to use even on a low amperage supply.
As to whether it is needed while on holiday, only you can decide that. We use a Remoska, an induction hob and a Cadac for cooking and have never felt the need for taking a microwave with us. As they are quite bulky, storage and work surface space are the main considerations.

Many thanks for this very helpful, we are presuming reading other posts re electrical usage on sites is not to have too many electrical appliances going at the same time

We used to take one in our Familia 320 and also our Troll 552 as there was an area of work surface over the fridge where it fitted and we piled some other stuff on top of it. We had a Tesco one which was inexpensive and received good reviews (and has a grill!)

However, we never took one in our Troll 540 or in the Troll 530 as there as no space to put it, and they do weigh a fair bit if you have to keep lugging them different places. We also took a small mini oven for its grill function (warming croissants etc.)
I suppose it really depends what use you will make of it - we will be joining one of our children and family in summer in a folding camper, the microwave will be useful for warming milk and sterilising etc. and for quick snacks, otherwise we now do without and use a variety of implements just as others do. I manage with a Cadac and a three burner hob just fine

As above #2, we also use a Remoska, an induction hob and a Cadac. We have not really found anything we cannot cook with this combination.
Prior to Remoska we used a small electric oven but wattage is high and they get VERY hot, unless you can track down the excellent Dualit Model DM01GB. They stopped making these because at near £200 they did not sell well. They are the same bomb proof build as the Dualit toasters and do a fine job as a second oven at home. Do not confuse it with the cheaper replacement model on sale now.

Over the years we have bought and taken allsorts of cooking implements but not a microwave.
We have used Remoska, Electric hotplate (double), mini oven with grill, heated frying pan with lid, Cobb BBQ, single burner potable gas hob, various BBQ's, Cadac.
Now we carry Cobb, Remoska, portable gas hob and Cadac which as Colin inferred with his items, covers all our cooking requirements. We use the odd restaurant as well

We often carry a small microwave oven in our Troll 540. We try to camp all year round and in winter we find the microwave really useful for doing soups, chillis and casseroles etc that we have batch cooked and frozen at home.
The microwave fits nicely under one of the long beds crossways and is used in the awning if it’s up or on the front dinette table.
I’m always conscious of the way we have moved away from real camping.....we take tv, microwave, induction hob, cadac etc. We have hot water, a big awning and a mover. I remember the old days in another place when these sort of subjects came up and the Spartans would leap to their keyboards chanting that this was not real camping and nobody needed a tv etc blah blah. Thankfully we’re more friendly here so I don’t mind admitting that we like the comfort and ease that our style of Eribaing gives us.
ps is the Nespresso machine taking this a bit far?😇
