I couldn't believe it when I was informed by our children during the '90's and early '00's when they were learning to drive, that they were taught they only needed to use the indicators if there was other traffic around and that their change of direction could affect other road users.

When travelling along the dual carriageway past our local town, most locals now pull out into the fast lane before reaching the several points where the roads from the town merge with the carriageway because not only does the majority of traffic merging onto the carriageway not indicate, they also don't slow down or stop.

You need only use your indicators if it is going to be use of other people, if you overtake on a motorway you need not indicate that you are going to move into the nearest left hand lane or or if you are the only car on the road!!

But there again driving in Bradford it is not only the no indicator rule it's no give way or stop at at a road end.....

Or it could be a crash for cash!!!!!

I would suggest that it is 'sensible ' to get into the habit of using an indicator before ANY manoeuvre , that way you are less likely to overlook doing so when it really matters.
Defensive driving....far better than saying "well I didn't need to indicate" after someone has collided with you.....

I was always told you need to indicate to pull out on carrigeways but you don't need t o indicate to pull back in as thet is where you ARE Supposed to travel (mid lane drivers!) Mind you I have never seen anyone who actually GIVES way when pulling onto motorways or carrigeways they think the motorway drivers are there to brake if they can't pull over to allow them to barge their way on !!!! rant over - goes back to gardening!

Oh dear - round here we still occasionally use hand signals but not always to tell people where we're going but sometimes to tell them where to go!

we used to call these winkers, until a small problem with a vowel, when directing someone to 'indicate' their intentions, something alone the lines of 'don't forget to w r.'. blush

I don't care what they do or don't teach you these days. Learning to drive, and then driving, is basically putting together series of actions that pretty soon become second nature. You're aware of them, but you don't have to think about them. If you did, you'd soon run out of time and end up in trouble. One of those series is Mirror Signal Manoeuvre. If you do that every time you change direction, whether it be turning a corner, moving back into a nearside lane or even, dare I say it, Exiting From A Roundabout!!!, then you can't go wrong. And if you do it every time, instead of choosing to do it or not depending on the context, then it becomes automatic.
