Camping & Caravan Club site prices

We are members of C&CC merely because their house insurance covers you for much longer than the standard 90 days and was a good price. We never seek out their sites so don't know much about them. Our elder son has taken the T5 on a social weekend with a group to the club site in Devizes and they are being charged £44 a night £37 for members.
We spend the vast majority of our touring time out of the UK, so not a lot of experience of prices here, except for the Eribafolk meets. We were thinking of doing a UK tour this summer, are these prices the norm out of the summer? (we have Asci).

We are in the other club. Unfortunately these prices seem to be the norm, [rip-off Britain] which is why like you we prefer abroad for longer stays.
We always look up CL's and independents first, but have noted that some Caravan Club sites have 1/2 price deals on mid week. It seems this is for the pitch only and the per person charge is full rate.
A couple of years ago we used http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/ and managed to get a break high season summer school holiday time at an adults only outside Ely near Cambridge. Interestingly they did not raise prices and availability was fine. http://www.riversideccp.co.uk/ The site is far nicer than it looks on the web. It is small, across the road from a river, a few owners statics around the sides and has wonderful grass. Showers a bit tired.

There is a discount for C&CC members over 65 but I think both clubs are overcharging these days.
The cl and cs networks are far better value for money although I feel many of them are also getting expensive.
There are some excellent smaller commercial sites with good facilities charging less than the so called ‘clubs’.

Just looked at availability on a small CC site in Somerset in July, admittedly without a shower block, £14 a night all-in.
There again, The Old Oaks in Glastonbury, an independent and arguably the best site in the country, are charging £47.70 for a Premier Pitch, Cancellation Cover, Reserve your own pitch and two dogs in Peak season. Their standard pitches in Low season with no add-ons are £22.

I could understand it if the site was on the beach or something, but Devizes?! I am sure it's very nice but for a single bloke with a VW camper £44 per night is a lot. He probably could get a room in a Premier Inn for that! He's with a group, so I think they are going to try to get a discount.
Outside the UK we tour usually without booking, deciding where to go when we set off in the morning. We don't always use ASCI sites in low season but have never paid unreasonable amounts other than directly on the coast/beach (or in Switzerland where their economy is very different). In high summer we phone ahead and check the availability and prices. I don't recall any campsite on the continent where we have paid anywhere near the equivalent of £44 per night out of season! I think the most we've ever paid in high season on the beach was 55 Euros (meeting our schoolteacher daughter). If we are to spend 4/6 weeks this year touring the UK, I had better do some homework!!

Good grief! That does seem a lot! We are members of the C&CC and have used them a lot over the years. Due to our great age (!) we do get a reduction in price. On the way to Lytchett manor we stopped at the C&CC site at Chipping Norton – small site with a good loo block, a bit noisy at times if you are on the side near the road, and a bit uneven on the grass pitches – but a good pub for a meal in the next village! Total cost for 2 nights with HS and EHU was £35.70 (£17.85 per night – no charge for dogs). NB this was in the second week of the school Easter holidays. After Lytchett we went on to the Charmouth site. This is much bigger and I think run as a franchise with a huge new loo block being built. Lots of WWBs on seasonal pitches or stored there. But handy for Lyme Regis and other beaches (we found some sun!). 6 nights there cost £107.10 (£17.85 per night again). On the way back we stopped for 3 nights at Chipping Norton again (and another meal in that pub). Now off season, the total was £46.65 or £15.55 per night. On the C&CC website for the Devizes prices range from £8.35 to £14.10 per night (members’ adult price). Even adding on for non- members, HS and EHU, £44.00 a night does seem very steep!

Our son and his friends had booked online. He/they queried the prices on site and they came down to £35 per night for him on a hardstanding pitch with elec. They charged 2 people and a small tent £63 for 2 nights! Thats more expensive than South Lychett at standard (i.e. non Eribafolk meet) rates, and that's a pricey campsite. I know campsites aren't a charity but some of the best campsites we have stayed on have also been some of the cheapest. I guess it's all supply and demand and what you can get away with charging.
A funny aside...we gave him our C&CC number to try getting the member discount on that. They said that the membership does cover children, but not 32yr old children

Quote: Blueyonder wrote in post #1I have just booked two nights early May at C&CC, Devizes, Lesley, for £39.70 (grass pitch, ehu, no pets) but we both qualify for the 'old gits special rates'.

We joined the club as we wanted to be able to visit our granddaughter who is at university in Egham and the nearest site is the C&CC at Chertsey. When I tried to make our initial booking two years ago, I was appalled at the cost for a non-member so promptly signed up to qualify for discounts. Since then, we have stayed at a few of their sites which, on balance, we prefer to those of the C&MHC as the staff seem to be a little more 'relaxed'. The one thing I don't like though is being escorted to a pre-designated pitch on arrival.
I fully endorse your comments regarding continental and ACSI camping as during the low season we have never pre-booked a pitch and almost without fail have been invited to choose our own pitch, set up how we like and notify the office once installed. The prices are so much cheaper too.
Rip-off Britain? Too right.

Oh well perhaps there are some benefits in being old and doddery. To be fair both at Ch. Norton and Charmouth we were given the choice of two or three pitches out of those available and we were glad to be escorted thereto as our motor mover isn't working and we needed help pushing! (NB there was no mention of pitching a certain way round as on some sites). By the way many thanks to those who helped get us on and off the pitch at Lytchett Manor!
