Look at the state of this bulb!

We are heading off tomorrow for some UK touring so, having hooked up the van, I decided to test the electrics. I should have know better after the last time.

All the lights were fine until I got to perhaps the least used one, the high intensity rear fog light which, according to my son who was monitoring things, 'flickered briefly then died.'

I knew there was a problem when I removed the red plastic cover and water gushed out over my hand. The fitting itself was in a right state with lots of rust showing and white, chalky deposits on the terminals. To my surprise, however, the bulb, the glass of which was partially covered with a white deposit and still had an intact filament, contained about a teaspoonful of cloudy water. The mystery though is how the heck did it get in there?

In the end I had to dry everything out; file the rust off the bulb contacts; cut off the old terminals on the wires and replace them with new crimped-on connectors after cleaning the blackened wires back to shiny copper with fine wet and dry; fit a new bulb and replace the lamp unit.

The light is now working but what a load of faffing about for a lamp that I might never have occasion to use in anger. Still, better safe than sorry, I suppose.

You fool - it's meant to be like that, that's why it's called a fog lamp

Hope you enjoy your tour.

Going anywhere nice? (as my granny used to say)

Fog lamp - like it.

Starting in Devizes then up to Hereford and after that, who knows? Hope to revisit Hadrian's Wall and visit relatives in Yorkshire.

That's about it, John.

Don't forget to toot and wave towards the nearside if you drive up the M6 northbound between J15 and J16. You'll only be doing 50mph at most as they've been installing managed motorways for the last several decades. Well it seems like decades anyway.

Hi Aaron,

Peace of mind is everything when you're pulling a caravan.Hopefully there will be no fog "oop Norf"
Our last visit to Devizes had two high lites, the butchers shop in the main street, lots of game and home made charcuterie and the sausages were fantastic, and the burgers! 'mmmm. Then we went for a bike ride along the canal towpath and watched the boats going through the staircase of locks, we chatted to some of the boatowners who had come from Lancashire and Oxfordshire and were on their way to Bath, some had been away for months! Then we went to the canal museum, very interesting.
Try and visit Vindalandia Roman museum on the (Hadrians) wall, also very interesting, and if you get the chance go up into Northumberland, the coast up to Berwick is wonderful, Craster for kippers and Seahouses for a trip out to the Farne Islands to see the birdlife.
Have a good trip.

With a slogan like that you should be working for the Northumberland Tourist Board, Michael

(Almost as good as, 'Portsmouth for the Continent, Petersfield for the Incontinent').

Northumberland is a gem. We were there a couple of years ago and stayed on a site in Seahouses, with splendid views from our pitch over to Bamburgh Castle and the Farne Islands.

And I'm sure Brian would find a visit to Lord Armstrong's house, Cragside, at Rothbury, right up his street.

He's probably been there already, though.
