Be careful when booking with the Camping & Caravanning Club.

This morning I telephoned the Camping and Caravanning Club to cancel three bookings due to ill health.

They were: Hereford (2 nights £25 deposit paid); Clitheroe (1 night paid in full £18.05) and Haltwhistle (4 nights £25 deposit paid).

I didn't expect to get a refund for the first two but fully expected my deposit to be returned for Haltwhistle, given the timing of my notification. 'But' said I, 'I'm giving you more than 72 hours notice.'

'Sorry, sir,' was the reply, 'you are confusing us with the Caravan and Motorhome Club. We require 30 days notification for you to qualify for a refund.'

Please note that when you book with the C&CC you are given the choice to pay either a £25 deposit with the balance due on arrival or the full amount at the time of booking. My advice, therefore, is NEVER pay the full amount as who knows what misfortunes might arise to prompt you to make a cancellation?

As it is, I lost £68.05 but if I'd paid up front I'd have been out of pocket to the tune of £135.

How dare I be ill while on holiday?

I wonder how many indignant CC (CMC) members, who clamour on that taking deposits, will sort out that Club's lack of pitch availability, realise that the sort of loss you've suffered would probably occur?

Look after yourself and navigate out of this dodgy patch.

Just a thought. Do you have any form of holiday insurance. We buy ours for the year and I wooder if you might be covered as your loss is through illness.

Many of the travel insurance policies that you take out for Europe are invalid in when in UK

Just catching up reading old posts came across this one which was of particular interest to myself. I had booked with the caravanning and camping club also but reason for me cancelling was I got my car wrote off with the police. I also lost deposits for my holidays it was a week before we were due to set off. Hey ho you live and learn as they say. But both circumstances were totally out of our control and both lost deposits.

Get well soon Aaron. It's only money, your health is worth a lot more than that.

I'm fine now, thank you, Steve.

It was only a temporary blip but a bit scary at the time, hence the desire to get home to consult my doctor.

Hi Aaron,

Useful information.

We generally use CS sites and usually only pay a nominal deposit or more often than not no deposit at all. A couple of weeks ago we spent the weekend at Wookey for Glastonbury Carnival that was a CS and no deposit. All down to what sites you prefer though.
