Folding Bikes

I've duly fitted the excellent mod detailed by Brian (Aaron Calder) to mount a scissor bike rack on the jockey wheel mount. Unfortunately I've been experiencing back problems and I'm avoiding as many heavy lifting jobs as possible - including lifting bikes onto the rack. I'm now thinking about getting one or two folding bikes (like Bromptons) to carry inside the van. Does anyone else have these, and any pointers on which ones to get?

Thanks

Hi Ron,
I have a Brompton which folds up and fits behind the drivers seat in the rear footwell in my Skoda . It is great to ride, easy to fold and unfold and beautifully engineered. You can also retro fit an electric motor for the future. None of us are getting any younger! There are lots of cheaper options but none come close to the Brompton. I have a 4 speed Sturmey Archer type hub gear and a low and a high ratio deraillieur, with straight handlebars. If you get one treat yourself to a stirrup type air pump they are so much better and more efficient than ordinary hand pumps.

We have two Bromptons, we also put them behind the front seats in the footwells,. They are expensive however just like an Eriba they don't lose much when resold. They are well made and tremendous fun..
...
Here is a cheap tip, the IKEA Dimpa bag fits them perfect to keep your car clean at £2.95.....

There are also many alternatives to bikes today. My husband rides a folding hike, but I use one of these https://www.ninebot-france.com/gyropode/minipro/ I used to ride an electric scooter but the segway is more comfortable and has better autonomy. Small, and east to get in and out of the car. Its very addictive!

That's very innovative Islay! I'll take a look, though the last time I tried a Segway I nearly killed someone!

Had a look around, and acquired 2 Bromptons, as they fold much smaller and neater than the competition. As Poptop320 said, they are expensive but they do seem to hold their value. The Dimpa bag suggestion was spot on!

From the article, I'm guessing that he was riding too close to the edge of a cliff which you could fall off walking too. They're so stable and easy to control that handicapped people use them. The monowheel is another thing, though. A man In our town whizzes about on one.

My brother in his 50s got flung off a Segeway at a leisure park, he spent the next 18 months with a frozen shoulder and numerous visits to the hospital for physiotherapy...

It was the big off road segway, it caught a tree root making him lean to one side which made it spin and then threw him off ..
