Hi all,

I've done the classic and dragged my 12/13 core cable along the road for some distance. Wires 9,10, 11 and 13 have been broken ...

Looking at the existing cable, there are 13 cables. I can't seem to find a 13 core cable with plug that contains the following wire :

- white with blue stripe

I can find a few on eBay such as : Werbung: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/13-Pin-Plug-P...48AAOSwo4pYgSNC

Can anybody help me identify the purpose of the white with blue stripe cable and where I can buy a 13 core cable with plug?

Many thanks
Robin

Hi Robin and welcome to Eribafolk.

This thread might help you.

Fitting a new 13 core cable and plug

Hi Randa, Thank you, I did see that.

Upon closer inspection I see from that post :

...Please note that on my van, the unused white/blue wire from pin 12 of the plug had been fitted with a terminal and parked on an unused piece of terminal strip.

Can anyone translate that into (total) idiot terms? Can I simply remove the white/blue wire from the smaller terminal block? I see it in the photo within the referenced thread.

I know that nothing is connected to pin 12 on the towing vehicle as I fitted the kit myself just 4 weeks ago.

I'm not sure if I fully understand the question, Robin, but as the blue/white wire serves no function, you can simply tape up the end of the new one and leave it floating inside the junction box. It doesn't have to be located on the terminal strip; I think mine was just parked there for convenience sake.

Hope this helps.

By the way, it's always good to hear that I'm not the only forum member guilty of gross dickheadery. To prevent the same thing happening again I've secured the loose bit of cable to the drawbar with a small bungy.

I've also got the t-shirt, driving all the way from home to North Yorkshire. Hardly a wire left intact. Green Flag pieced it together temporarily and I then had a new piece fitted from the floor junction box.

A caravan tech advised me that to avoid the problem you only need to put a couple of twists in the cable before fitting it to the car. It actually works too.

Thanks for the advice everyone and sorry I wasn't being very clear. My question was that I can't seem to find a 13 core lead with a plug for sale anywhere.

I can see from the 12 core leads available online, that the white with blue stripe lead is missing.

I'm just concerned that if I buy a 12 core lead without the white with blue stripe cable, that I'll be leaving something important unconnected to the towing vehicle.

Is that clearer?

Yes, understood.

As the white/blue wire serves no useful purpose (i.e. it connects to nothing either in the car or the caravan), it makes sense to use a 12 core cable instead, so don't worry. Order a pre-wired cable and plug and follow the instructions in my 'How to......' article and you'll be fine.

Sorry, I must be explaining myself terribly. The blue and white stripe wire is connected to something in the junction box. It's connected to the smaller group of connections. I
An additional wit.re then 'bridges' this back to the larger group of connections joining where the white wire goes to from the 13 core cable ....

The white cable simply goes to earth so it would be a safe place to 'park' a redundant wire that has no function.

If I were you, I'd simply disconnect the blue/white cable from the terminal strip, connect everything else up and then before finalising the job connect caravan to car and check that everything in the caravan is working.

As the attached PDF shows, it's easy to get confused with 13 pin cable wires as there isn't one definitive colour scheme.

When describing striped wires, the base colour is always written first, and the (thinner) trace colour second, ie, White/Blue describes a white wire with a blue trace.

Common returns (earths):

Pin 3 (always a white wire) is the common return for the running lights - no other returns should be connected to this.

Pins 11 & 13 are common returns for the fridge (pin 10) and charger (pin 9) respectively - these should not be connected together at the caravan, (they are both connected to the towcar's chassis).

Great, thanks for your help everyone.

I'll order a 12 core cable and that should suffice. Thanks again. Maybe I should order two for when I trail the cable on the floor the next time! That would make a total of 3 as expected having previously done it with a trailer.....
