I'd be interested to see how it fares after a few weeks. We're lucky; our van is younger than yours, and by the looks of the roof the previous owners either looked after it properly from new or never actually took the cover off.

Maybe they were spies or on some kind of witness protection scheme and left the cover on when they went camping in it.
