Breakdown Insurance options

Hi Folks,

breakdown insurance time again for me. I know it's been discussed before but we are in a rapidly changing market and I'm interested in current views and practices.

My RAC Arrival quote has just rolled in at £195 up £50 fro last year. I can probably get that reduced to £160 with a phone call but also looking for other (cheaper) options. I don't need European cover.

Thanks

I have the Premium package with Green Flag through the Caravan Club. https://www.caravanclub.co.uk/insurance/...licy-breakdown/
I pay £13.50 for the first car and about £30 for a second vehicle. This includes home start etc and is "two way" if you have a pre-booked site. It also covers the caravan if this is at fault as opposed to just the car.

We also have the Premium package with Green Flag through the Caravan Club with personal cover added at £30.50 so all our cars and any we are travelling in are covered. We have used them twice for the cars and found their service far superior to the RAC where we were members for over 15 years.

Having changed years ago from the RAC to Green Flag who then were a lot cheaper. Eventually Green Flag got too expensive. Now covered through the Caravan Clubs Mayday offering, who use GF. We have their Premium UK and Personal Cover @ £134 (2018/19), £134 (17/18), £131 (16/17), £126 (15/16). So an increase of only £8 over a 4 year period.

Just renewed mine with Green Flag which is for full European Cover ( EuroPlus) includes cover for Eriba same as Mayday (same company but Mayday only covers UK Breakdowns. Paid £54.88

The only downside was that I have auto-renewal so received letter which had increased the premium from previous year £56.84 to £82.88 !!! Went online and generated a new quote with GF which came out at £54.88. Called company and asked for explanation to which they said lower price due to special online discounts !! When I inquired about customer loyalty there was a stony silence.
I therefore renewed the policy for online price !

Seems expensive when you consider my cover with GF!

Don't know how you get that so cheap Eribanaut.

I had a look at GF's Euro plus and it starts at over £100, no mention of caravan.

Just ran new quote EuroPlus came to £63.84. If you read the policy booklet it includes trailer/caravan

I would have to add £51 to that for Caravan Club membership so brings it back to same as my RAC quote.

We have a Nationwide Building Society Flex Plus account, which costs us £13 per month. This includes breakdown cover for 2 cars, plus any cars we happen to be in, includes caravans less than 8M in length (no problem there then), includes European cover and breakdown at home & recovery. This also includes travel insurance. Overall this saves us quite a lot. I do not work for Nationwide.

We've also got the Nationwide Flex plus account with benefits including European breakdown cover, including caravan. Well worth the account fee (costs about £13 per month, £7 is offset by interest on the account, so breakdown cover, world wide travel insurance, phone insurance for 2 of us costs about £72. We don't work for Nationwide either!

That Nationwide Flex plus account looks interesting. I've just read the terms and it states that the definition of a passenger excludes pets and animals with the exception of assistance dogs. How does that affect recovery for example. Could the recovery vehicle refuse to carry my dog?

When I broke down in Norfolk this year Green Flag were 3 hours late for a pre booked recovery. The guy couldn't connect my caravan electrics effectively and also refused to accept my 2 dogs in his "four cab" due to "potential allergies".The dogs had to stay in my car on the back of his truck.

For the last couple of years, I have been trying to figure out what is the difference between Green Flag cover (which includes the caravan) and Mayday Cover provided by the Caravan Club via Green Flag as the differences in the premium are significant.

As well as offering options to get you to and from your holiday and providing some income towards a hire car, Mayday also provides cover for things happening to the caravan independently of the car. As I understand it, Green Flag will recover your caravan if something happens to the car, but Mayday also covers something happening to the caravan regardless of the state of the car which a Green Flag policy would not cover. However, the Green Flag website does not make this 100% clear and state clearly the differences in regards to the caravan.

Mayday now also offer Premium Plus (for another £30) which covers the caravan whilst at home or in the storage depot, so if you have a flat tyre or brake issue they will come and assist and/or move the van for you. This is something not covered in the Premium plan. Likewise, I'm not sure how far a standard Green Flag policy with home start would go in providing a similar service.

I wish we could get 100% accurate information on the differences between Green Flag and Mayday so we could make an informed choice and decide on the level of risk against cost we are personally willing to accept.
