Awnings for Troll 530 Forever Young

Hello to all you helpful Eriba Folk out there. We have just purchased our first Eriba and can't wait to use her, but there are a few purchases and things that need to be done before we can. One of them being an awning, I am looking for advice/information on what people consider to be the best sort of awning to use. We know that there are only a few companies that make them to fit Eriba's and most are quite expensive. So suggestions and the reasons for why please would be extremely helpful.

Thank you

Chris & John

First real question is what sort of touring will you be doing? If you are staying for a while in one place then a metal frame canvas awning is great, for space and stability. If you are moving every few days then a driveaway or porch awning might be a better bet. If you are only planning on being out in sunny weather, the Continent or the UK if you're lucky then a sun canopy, caravanstore or omnistore might be all you need.
There are so many options because everyone's use of their Eriba is different.

Welcome,
we are now on our 4th Eriba and have owned 8 awnings, I think.

First thing to do is decide what you need to use the awning for. If you just want some shade from the sun or protection from a shower, then save yourself a fortune and lot of hassle by getting either a 3m Isabela Shadow or a 3.1m Fiamma Caravanstore. I prefer the later as you can leave this in the awning rail, but it does infringe on the door.

If you want the space of an awning for longer stays then probably the best [I'm biased as I own one] band biggest is the Fortex Aronde at over 5.5 x 3 m and about £2,000 new. Next is the similar looking Unico, slightly cheaper and smaller. Both are stunning looking awnings and do come up 2nd hand at about £500 to £800. 2017 saw the arrival of the Kampa pop-air inflatable awning at about £900 for a Troll. Owners of pre 2010 vans have been using these without issue, but those of us like you with newer higher level vans have had very mixed results, experiencing pull out from the awning track. Mine went back for a full refund. 2019 has seen some sneaky changes to the design to resolve this issue, and if it has worked I would buy one again. For the price it is probably the best option out there. If you do buy one then get the excellent Kampa awning carpet, don't bother with the tie down straps and avoid the awning gutter trim like the plague.

Finally use the search facility for pictures and ask lots of questions. We are a bunch of anoraks who like to share our experiences so you hopefully make less mistakes than we have.

Can't argue with any of the above but I know a lot of folk also like the Walker Touring Plus. g8p650-Walker-Touring-plus.html#viewport

Also many of us use Clairval or Soplair Chalet type awnings (preferably with fibreglass poles). See our Awning Picture Gallery for more ideas.

Thank you for your response, much appreciated. Usually we stay on the same site for duration of our holiday and have pretty much always used a tent when staying for two or three nights and moving on. However we are both hoping that our Eriba is going to be used for both sorts of holidays, guessing that may necessitate more than one awning. On our previous vans we have generally only used a porch awning and that may be all we will need. With the porch awnings the ones that fit Eriba's are they big enough to maybe cook in as well as house the wet boots and coats etc. or would we need full size to do all of those things. Sorry may sound silly when we have caravan experience to ask these questions but I think Eriba life maybe a whole different ball game.

Best Regards

Chris

Chris,
I have not owned a porch awning. Automotive Leisure did at one time supply a porch awning at about 1.5 x 1.5m footprint, but this as you see was small and I'm unsure if it was suitable for the later taller vans.
A drive-away motorhome awning might meet your need, but I could not get on with the one I had. Another alternative is the Sunncamp Swift See here:- Sunncamp Swift Van Canopy 260 (2)
We are planning our 6 week trip through France this summer using one of these and an Isabella Shadow instead of a full awning. I must admit we also have a Fiamma Caravanstore permanently on the opposite side as a dry/shaded area for clothes airer, bikes etc.

Hi Colin,
Thank you for your response, our Eriba Troll is a 2009 model so I guess the Kampa pop-air inflatable would fit being pre 2010 or is it not the case with the 'Forever Young' model? I am going to have a look at your other suggestions but probably second hand not new. Probably a load more questions coming your way at some point. Once again tanks for the help much appreciated.

Best Regards

Colin,

Must admit the Sunncamp Swift awning looks interesting as quite similar set up to what we've had before. Apart from a few weekends away to see how we fair with the van, we are planning three weeks doing the NC500 before going to look after my sons dogs while they go abroad for a wedding. Staying at various campsites the small awning will probably be the way to go for that trip. Although I think we will at some point need a full awning, so many different ways to go about this, hopefully the dry runs we do may shed light on what we are going to need.

Chris,
you must have one of the first "Forever Young" Trolls. They were a bit of a transition model at the new taller height and I thought came out in 2010.
The Kampa Pop-Air was designed to fit the different heights of vans, but has been an issue for the later taller vans such as yours. You might be lucky with one, but I would not risk it. This year they have updated the awning, the 2019 model having an extended awning chord detail. It appears this may have solved the problem and I'm waiting to see from any owners out there how it performs. If it has I will probably buy one again, as apart from being a bit of a faff to get into the awning channel we liked it.

We bought our Troll 530 four years ago, and with it came a Soplair Ardeche, thrown in, from another source. We struggled with this initially, because the lugs for attaching the transverse poles where fitted in the wrong place on the van, it never really fitted.

So we then made a sunshade from a Coleman GP tent Awning by reducing the size and sewing on the webbing to connect it via the awning strip on the side of the van.I must admit that it was a copy of someone elses idea but it worked. However it was a bit flimsy and thin, easily filled with water in downpours, and didn't really give good shade.

Then I began to look at air awnings recommended for Eribas, most will work but don't fit around the rear window or don't allow the door to open properly.
Then I studied the cassette awnings which also seem to foul the door.

Then I repositioned the hook end lugs and now our Soplair fits beautifully. The Soplair has removeable front and sides so we can use as a sunshade or as a proper room when it's cooler. So many awnings don't have removable sides.
This all goes to illustrate that one awning with adaptable features is as good several options for all eventualities. The Soplair Ardeche no longer seems to be marketed but the Walker awnings are similar and seem to be very well made with good strong zips and attachments. So we are still using a twenty year old Ardeche awning, we have had a to replace one or two bungee loops , and make the odd patch but it works! In Sept last year we even fitted the caravan skirt
and heated the awning with a blow heating, very toasty.
We also know that we provide hours of fun and enjoyment for other caravanners who sit and watch as we put it up, and we have even been given cups of tea and G&T's by new neighbours, when it was very hot, awnings can be good for relations with your caravanning neighbour, and are an endless topic of comparison and chat on the forum!!

Hi everyone
we purchased a kampa pop air pro 365 new with our troll 530 in Oct 2017. As we do all our touring on the continent have only used it once so will be advertising it for sale on the forum if you're interested
