Green card Caravan insurance

Hi all.

We plan to holiday in Spain and France this August with our Eriba in tow throughout. Currently I have a Green Card to cover this holiday but Box 6 (Category of Vehicle) of the green card has the letter A (A= car) only. After looking at another forum topic here on this subject, and after checking with various insurance companies apart from mine, they all include code F (for a trailer) alongside code A. So Box 6 should read A/F. However, my insurance company is refusing to include code F. They say that as they are only insuring the car then they cannot include F also. My cover is for damage caused by a towed trailer or caravan so I imagine they should include it.

So finally, I get to ask this question - when towing a UK caravan in France and Spain do I require separate caravan insurance? My caravan is under 750kg gross weight.

I ask this question because 1st Central (my car insurance company) state on their website that - 'For countries that require separate trailer insurance, a separate Green Card may be required for the trailer as well'

Appreciate any help on this.

Hi Colin and Paula.

I think your car insurance company is wrong. As long as they've been made aware of the fact that you tow a trailer or a caravan (by virtue of the fact that you've told them your car has a tow ball) then they are responsible for third party cover on anything you tow.

Our car insurer, LV, had no objection to sending us a green card marked A and F when we asked them for it although our van is insured with Saga. They didn't need proof that the van WAS insured elsewhere because in answer to a seperate question about travelling in Albania where our car is covered but our van isn't, LV stated the fact that the van is covered third party when hitched to the back of our car.

RE: 'I think your car insurance company is wrong'.

Yes I believe you are correct on that. Several friends and colleagues have got exactly the same deal as you without even requesting the A and F codes. Indeed they don't even have caravans in the first place. As it stands I have now went down the customer complaints line and will hopefully get a 'good' reply in the next 3 days.
I will update on this to help avoid problems like this for others.

Following updates today (yesterday now!) on the .GOV website concerning Green Cards for caravan/trailers, AND after several emails and phone calls to my insurance company, I am finally to be issued a separate caravan green card for our caravan. Happy days there! Anyway, please check out the .GOV link below for reference...Thanks to help from Randa and advice given from other parts of this forum btw. I'm off to bed :)

Just received my green cards from LV. They have sent two, one for car (A) and one for caravan (F) Very good service as only called them on Sunday afternoon.

Guess what? Got my caravan green card today also. It was wrong! To date, I now have 4 for my car - all exactly the same, 1 wrong caravan one with A on and not F, but awaiting yet another correct one with F on.
Right now I really like the sound of LV. Its been 4 weeks since I started this palaver. When I finally get it, I'll frame it, and stick on the wall of our 91 Pan.

One of my two turned up today. It is for the caravan and it's wrong so a new correct one is on its way. It has car reg and make and says F for trailer. On the Tesco system this is what gets churned out if they say it's a trailer. They have to input caravan to be able to enter the chassis No and make, and then it gives a card with these details and F for trailer. It's so confusing.
The correct one for car is on its way, allegedly.

If I get one with the word caravan and the letter F on I will be overjoyed! So far its like an episode of Sesame Street. Anyway I plan to have a lie down somewhere when alls done...and dream of a new insurance company - probably LV I think.
One more post to go I hope.

Mike, I've only driven it solo yet. The one down side is on the 280 mile trip to Devon the seat was not as comfortable as the diesel Yeti I sold. For a petrol it's fairly economical, about 40mpg around town and on a run mid/high 50's if driven sensibly. The sensible bit is difficult as even with only 900 miles on the clock it is fairly "brisk" and I imagine with some miles on it both performance and economy will improve. The drive is very refined and the interior a nice space to be in. Oozes quality in whatever you touch. Boot is also bigger than expected, in fact bigger than the Yeti, although this had a full size spare wheel and the Audi has a space-saver that I sourced.
The maiden tow is planned towards end of this month, again the 280 mile trip to Devon where our son and partner have taken over a field outside Buckfast for organic produce. I'm expecting low to mid 30's.

I got the caravan one finally, so all good. It took 5 weeks but was worth it for the peace of mind.

After reading this post whilst on holiday in New Zealand I started to wonder what my insurer was going to do. I needn't have worried. Aviva sent out an email to everyone stating they had set up an easy online request system. So whilst on holiday I applied and today when I got back 2 letters were waiting for me. One green card for the car and another for the caravan. Now that's service.
