Filling the water tank!

I did a very stupid thing back in January this year when we decided to take a 3 day break in our Triton 420 GT. It had been laid up since early November, so before setting off from home I cleansed the water system, and in so doing I removed the large cap on the top of the internal 40 litre water tank located beneath the settee, and forgot to replace it!
When we arrive on site it is routine to collect 4 watering cans full of water which I pour through the outside filler (like putting fuel in your car). However, on this occasion I was distracted by a fellow camper, which resulted in me proceeding to add a 5th can full! Normally I carry on pouring water in until it glugs back up through the filler cap and over my feet, when I'm assured the tank is full. On this occasion this didn't happen, so after a while I went inside to investigate and soon found myself paddling in a wet fitted carpet! On lifting the settee I quickly spotted the unfitted cap missing from the top of the tank, lying alongside it, and this had allowed the best part of a gallon of water to overflow all over everything. Not a good experience on a very chilly January afternoon with a frost forming.
After more than 20 year's of caravanning, I was ashamed of myself, and the cleaning up and drying out was certainly not a good way to start a winter break.
Yes, I'm now very much a senior citizen, but I thought I was experienced enough not to forget such a vital thing as re-fitting the cap on top of the tank. It certainly won't happen to me again (I hope), but I thought it might be worth mentioning, if only to prevent anyone else having to cope with soaking wet carpets in January!

We all do these things !
I do know someone, mentioning no names, who cleansed our system, and had left the drain hole in the open position, so all the water poured outside, took a while to notice.
Not as messy as your experience, but still “ one of those things “

Moving the van with the motor mover having forgotten Mrs Calamity was still indoors cleaning. Didn't know she knew those sort of words!
