Gas locker cover renovation

Hi.

For anybody interested in refurbishing their Eriba gas locker hood and surround then heres my attempt on our 91 Eriba Pan. I also did the wheel trims to match.

Materials used:

3 x grades of wet/dry sandpaper (220, 400, 600)
1 x 120 grade sanding block
1 x Plastikote grey primer spray
2 x Plastikote matt grey top coat spray
1 x Isopon plastic bumper filler mix
12 x grey plastic screwcaps
1 x 1m grey butyl sealant tape (like putty!)
Epoxy resin mix

Firstly heres the before pic:

Everythings a bit rough! two different colours with peeling paint everywhere, and more than a few cracks.

Heres a few close up shots showing some of the damage - oh dear!

Anyway, here we go. Take the whole unit off the caravan. Its easy - just remove the screws and ease down from the the seal, then pull forward. Hidden spiders will appear at this stage! Be aware that the top section of the surround is impeded slightly by some folded up sheet metal. This needs bent down slightly to pull the unit forward. Heres another pic:

Moving on and starting on the locker door, remove the lock itself, and the rubber sealing tape on the inside. To remove the sealing tape, use white spirits and a tooth brush until its all gone. Just like magic! Sort of. Stubborn bits can be removed with anything blunt - e.g a spoon. Heres another pic:

So, what next? Take a rough sanding block (around 120 grade) and get rid of the peeling paint. Now find the cracks and glue all using 2 part epoxy resin. Let those dry for a couple hours. Now go over the whole locker door with some 220 wet and dry to abrade the thing. Next apply some flexible plastic bumper filler onto the damaged areas. I used Isopon, but there are plenty of other brands on the market. See below.

Now rub down the bumper filler, starting with 220 and working your way to 600 or whatever grade you choose yourself really. Use plenty of water in the process btw. This stage usually takes 2 or 3 applications, with the inevitable rubbing down in between.
You should end up with something like this.

Now the fun bit! Clean the whole lot with white spirits, let it dry, then spray, spray, spray! - with Plasticote grey primer that is. 2 to 3 coats is plenty I reckon. Now step away from the yoke, have some wine or tea, and let it dry over night. Heres a pic:

When you wake up the next morning, have breakfast then apply the top coat. Plastikote matt grey that is. Its great stuff! Remember to wear a suitable mask throughout when spraying. 3 to 4 top coats later (with about 10 minutes in between), you should end up with something like this:

Now without going through the whole sordid tale regarding the surround, fixing the cracks, etc etc, heres a final pic of the reassembled unit on the Eriba.

Footnotes: Use Butyl tape to seal around the unit and wheel trims. Also plastic screw caps add a finishing touch to the project.

Total cost was £57 instead of £270 or for a locker door alone! - So Paula and I are well chuffed!

Just seen this. Looks really smart. New to forum and picking up tips. This is my next big job. We have several cracks and a big hole to work with.

Had a quick look but it is too big a job before our next trip.
Ours seems to snag on the trim that goes around the front of the van.
1. did you loosen the trim or just pull hard
2. did it go back under ok
Cheers

Hi. No you shouldn't have to loosen the trim. If you have look at pic 4, there is some folded up parts of the body that needs bent down 1st. After that the surround can be eased downwards without much force. It will slot back under the trim easily.

Footnote: Use JB plastic weld for the cracks. A Fibrefix rigid patch on the inside of the hole, then built up with plastic bumper paste, should take care of the hole.
