Bike rack can carry more than bikes

Hello,
I'm in the middle of preparing to go away with the PuckL 230gt, for the first time this year.
During the winter months I was debating on getting some sort of carrier to attach to the rear bike rack.
I've ended up getting the Fiamma cargo back. I have to say that the quality of construction is not that good. The first time I opened the zip, it broke!
Anyway, I've lined the Cargo Back with ply board and sealed the boards to make it waterproof, it now appears to be more sturdy.
I've just sat it on the cycle rack to see how it sits and I'm now happy with it.

That's a construction and a half! Have you any idea what it does to the noseweight when loaded?

It reminds me of our Transit campervan. It had a top hinged rear hatch, rather than the normal barn doors. I fitted a Fiamma rack, which was fine and then added a large Fiamma plastic box which again was fine. However with a few bits inside the weight became too much for the standard Ford door struts and it kept sliding down on top of anybody at the rear of the van.

I then found that a special set of struts was available for just such issues and bought and fitted them, without telling Mrs SDA. They locked in place when the door was open and to free them you had to lift the door slightly.

The inevitable happened and one day Mrs SDA went to shut the rear door and as it was stiff she virtually swung on it!!!! Needless to say the struts weren't happy and her weight on the end of a 5ft or so pivot resulted in the door hinges twisting in the van frame, the door edges going out of shape and one strut bent at right angles. Luckily the window in the door stayed in place and after attention at the bodyshop all was returned to good order at a relatively low cost. You can guess how relations were strained for a while.

You can buy that very same van here http://motorhomes.caravansforsale.co.uk/...1-cs717857.aspx It seems it's no worse for its adventure in 2008.

It should not affect the nose weight as its a fraction of the total weight of two sports bikes I normally carry .

The carry bag together with the ply board weighs in at less than two kilo.

As stated the intention is to carry bulky light weight items such as a couple of camping chairs or maybe some extra bedding.

I've carried two bikes on the carrier and never noticed any difference what's so ever. The vehicles I've towed with are a Ford Focus, VW Eos and my present

vehicle a VW Golf. Never ever noticed any snaking or other ill effects and always been within the limits of the recommended nose weight.

I did do a bit of research before deciding on which carry box to go for and the weight of the Fiamma plastic box made it out of the question. I think it weighed in

empty about the same as a bike!
