Hookup leads

Just lately, I have been seeing more and more members, on this forum and the facebook page, displaying pictures of their hookup leads coiled around a plastic reel instead of being totally uncoiled. Do people not know the effects of leaving a mains lead coiled up ? At the very least it will get warm and could be a fire risk. It can be connected and any excess laid parallel to the lead to stop that happening. I expect folk to say..I have been doing it for years and nothing has happened, but it's basic physics.

My lead has two load ratings, rolled up and fully un-coiled. With the lower rating of 900w I am happy to leave it rolled up, using just one of my low wattage appliances at a time. When on site for longer periods I unwind and happily use two or more appliances up to the max amperage at the post.

I cut my 25m hook-up lead into 2/3 and 1/3 with male female and connectors, I can have a short, medium or long lead to suit the pitch. Easier to handle when coiling too (I don't use a reel).

With the purchase of a pair of connectors and a judicious "cut-n-shut", from a 25m cable you could have three separate lengths- say 8m, 17m, and 25m - plenty of choice there.

Just to add to the confusion. In the UK I carry a standard 25m length of cable that is laid out on the ground and then plugged into van and then post.
On the continent I use a 45m reel that plugs into the hook up post and usually lives under cover of the awning. I check the reel outlet for polarity and if needed put a 300 mm conversion lead in before running a 4m length to the hook up on the side of the van.
Using this method I used to plug rcd's into the reel and then leads out to the boys pup tents or feed for the awning.

No need to cut it. We had ours cut into three by a very nice campsite owner and a ride on mower while in Central france last year

What has leaking taps to do with the very real danger of coiled ehu leads?

Connectors from B&Q (other suppliers are available) 1x 5mtr and 1x 10mtr length of cable, enough for any eventuality. even a short length of cable with the neutral feed to live for those French sites where the polarity is reversed.

Skoderiba - Carrying 3 separate lengths means carrying more weight than necessary = whereas the methods above of "cut-n-shut" mean you only carry a total of 25m (the original 25m cut into 3 pieces)

It must be something French, they cut mine last year whilst cutting a hedge.

The extra cables live in the back of the car when not in use, avoids having great lengths of cable lying around. The last site we were on, there was a choice between a pitch with the ehu around 30 mtrs away or another needing only about 4 mtrs. Out with the 5mtr cable.

Am I right in thinking that some sites either don't like or don't allow hook up leads connected to each other?

I use one of these if I need to use a second lead.
