My Alko 1300 has started to groan at low speed and I have been advised to use White spirit to clean ball and coupling? Any advice please as I am sure this question has been answered in the past.

Don’t think white spirit is good because it leaves a residue.
Meths or alcohol or brake cleaner is better.
Deglaze the friction pads.
Clean out any dust from the hitch.
Clean your ball.
Grease your nipples.
Hope it helps.

I haven't got an Alko hitch but I'll try that

Hi Trroll…never used grease. This brings back memories when we were going to our first Eribameet 4 years ago and spent 2 hours driving round and round Chievely Services trying to work out the terrible noise!!. Eventually someone helped us and told us to wire brush the tow ball, then use a green scourer over it and finally wipe clean with a dry cloth. On the tow hitch part use fine wet/dry sandpaper and rub round inside the ‘cup’ to deglaze the friction pads and again wipe clean. We now do this everytime we hitch up and have never had the problem back. Good luck. Chris

They're talking about greasing the drawbar nipples not the ball (which would immediately ruin the friction damper pads).

The pads need to be de-glazed with fine emery paper and rust should be similarly removed from the ball.

The important step is then to wipe both pads and ball with a cloth moistened with alcohol or meths to remove all the dust. This will cure the groaning noises.

I haven't found it necessary to do this on every trip as so much depends on distances and type of terrain covered.
