Window Auto Stays

For no apparent reason, the window auto stays for our Eriba back window, gradually lost their "Click".

Now back at home, I decided to investigate the problem so removed the pair and dismantled them. Thre is a spring metal clip in each of them which sits over and under some peg inserts. In the case of ours, the clips were a different shape and I hardly think it was due to wear and tear as to reshape them needed two pairs of pliers.

However, after looking at another stay in good working order, I noticed that there was a very small aluminium block missing from both non functioning stays, that is trapped behind the leading end of the spring clip. Apparently this little block is an engagement tooth and the clicking is where it rides up and down the aluminium channel.

Nothing else for it other than to order two new ones. They are Polyplastic Auto Stays with a Lever Lock. Length 280mm (that's the length of the extruded aluminium rail. Although some manufacturers quote the overall length including fittings as 300mm).

At first I couldn't locate any in stock so, with restrospect, I foolishly ordered a pair with Lock-Slide-On. circa £28.00 incl delivery. Lock-Slide-On means no holes at the handle end because "The Lock Slides On" doh. I should have realised that !

I think I've got away with it though as by using a cut down pencil eraser in the Lock slide channel and drilling the handle flange out ( the flange is identical to the existing one but without holes in it), they seem to do the trick. The existing screws still fit although the original flange has slotted csk holes. It's very important to get the new hole positions precise to enable the window to close between the latch plates in the window opening.

I couldn't replace the handle ends with the exisiting ones as they are rivetted on to the aluminium rail.

On my Familia I replaced a couple of the click stays with the old fashioned thumb screw type as usually found on the bathroom and kitchen area windows. These are a lot less trouble.
