Getting the stains off the roof!

Came home from Durdle Door campsite having been subjected to a couple of nights of leaves, sap, bird poo and all kinds of stuff being blown at us. Had meant to clean up and wax the roof before we went anywhere, but ran out of time. Jumped on a hop-up to clean the roof only to be faced with this mess:

Was very worried the horrid brown stains (there were many more than that photo shows) would be there forever or I'd be painting over them
Just then I remembered the other half had this stuff in the cupboard.

Thought I'd give it a go and to my delight it cut through to the white again. The surface was however quite dull as a result but I soldiered on, hoping I could give it all a good wax polish afterwards and bring it back to a decent finish.
Three coats of Triplewax (and lots of elbow grease) later, I was very relieved to see quite a nice shine.

Definitely time for Esther's naming ceremony

So wish I had done this before the trip, and am hoping that the new protection will prevent such damage in future - or at least make it easier to clean off. I'm guessing Esther's outside hadn't had any such attention in the previous 21 years (a bit like the inside..!) and so the paint on the roof was pretty soft. It's quite satisfying to see the water beading after todays rain.

Can recommend the 'Pink Stuff', but would advise reading the label and taking great care. Will report back with any other uses.

Lovely job. Do you plan to keep the van under cover or will it be outside? If the later a cover should be on your list. Inside or out a couple of waxings or Bobby Dazzler [great on the dimples] will pay dividends,

Yes she will be outside, and luckily there was a nice green cover included in the sale.

At this point though I'm feeling very glad that I've got the smallest van - therefore less surface area to keep clean!

Hi Verity and Steve.

Good job As you said on another post you don't know how aggresive "The Pink Stuff" is.

Many on the forum use this stuff instead:- Autoglym Super resin Polish followed by a polish with Simoniz or similar (with carnauba).

Hi Randa

Yes, it was really a sort of 'last resort' thing and no doubt removed some of the paint!

Fenwicks caravan cleaner and Bobby Dazzler is good for the van. For stubborn stains use Fenwicks in a 10:1 solution put in spray bottle and apply to the stains leave for 1-2 mins then wipe off. Bobby Dazzler protects the surface and makes it easier to remove dirt.
