12v Electrics (Newbie Question)

Hi
Just purchased our first ever caravan (Triton 420GT 2002) So complete novices !
When we visited it yesterday to clean and tidy it up I noticed that none of the inside electrics were working
I assume this is because the Leisure battery isn't charged. We were'nt able to hook up to the mains but I attached the (13 pin) cable to the car and ran the engine. All the running lights were okay .
I flipped the two Circuit breakers under the bed but still nothing happening inside.
I thought the 12v for the fridge, lights and pump should run off the car ?
Am I missing something very obvious? Probably won't be able to check the EHU until we do our first pitch next week.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Ian

Do you have dual 7 pin connectors, grey & black, or the 13 pin. What make is your car. You may well find it is not wired to provide power to your fridge and caravan battery whilst running. This would not be unusual.

Does your van have the original BIP unit and Schaudt Booster and if so, is the light on the booster coming on when you blip the throttle?

If you do have the original electrics, you may need to consider an upgrade along these lines.

I'm not at the van right now but it does have the original BIP box with what I assumed was a ransformer attached to the side wall of the compartment. This looks bigger than the picture of the booster in the linked thread but the BIP is the same. We are getting the van serviced over the weekend prior to taking it out for the first time next week. I will check with the service engineer that he checks over the electrics. We aren't intending to use the leisure battery a great deal , we dont have a mover and we wiil use sites with EHU hook ups but I assume that we'll need the 12v system to be working in order to use the lights, water pump and fridge when using the EHU.

You do but you don't need a battery for that, most continental Eribas come without batteries, so the battery can if you wish be removed

There is generally a habitation relay that turns off the 12V supply to lights, water pump etc when attached to the towing vehicle. All you get is 12V supply to the fridge and leisure battery if the towing vehicle is wired up appropriately.

Even if you have a 13 pin socket fitted it may not have been fully wired. It's a big job to run two heavy cables from the battery at the front of the car to the socket, requires a lot of trim to be removed. Not all tow bar fitters will include that part unless specifically requested.
