Bike rack, A frame mounted

I've just bought a couple of weeks ago a 2015 320 and had a Thule A frame specific "smart" (it's name) rack fitted before i took delivery. I've been playing around on with which bike i put first ( 2 bike rack) my road bike with flat bars on my other half's small mountain bike. if i put the small mountain bike first the pedals get to close or even touching front of caravan. If i put my rd bike with flat bars first the handle bars get rather close or even touching the window & is i did a trip i can imagine it would chaff the window. i have know put a good quality strap with a buckle round the top of the bike rack & tension-ed gently to the jockey wheel bracket which seems to stop the problem. Has anyone else had this type of problem.

I made a couple of bracing bars up from odd bits of awning frame parts. One end clamps around the vans front grab handles and the other end onto the Thule rack/frame.

I have the same rack and do the following:
1/ zip tie some 25mm pipe lagging around the offending pedal
2/ turn the handle bars round on the inside bike
3/ with both bikes on the rack strap the crank arms together so that they can't move

Bit of a faff but no scratches or dents yet, and that includes some really bad roads and farm tracks.
The pipe lagging isn't really needed but it gives me some peace of mind when positioning the bikes

I replaced the pedals with fold up ones.

I've cable tied a sponge on the end of the handle bars just in case the strap i put on to tension the bikes/rack forward slackens. regarding turning the handle bars, its all carbon fiber and don't really like to turn it round and adjust the load on headset bearing & Pedals are Time clip-in mountain bike ones even tho its a rd bike. I'll be wiser after my next trip to see if it works OK
