It's difficult to find a new price for a caravan window but the front windows for an Eriba are a bit special so I would think Brian (Aaron Calder) had a good deal.

I wonder if in view of this accident, we should bring up the subject of towing covers and whether folk who currently own a cover think that a cover would be stout enough to absorb an impact of such magnitude?

Brian also drives a low slung car so less of his van is sheilded by the car.

That is a very difficult question to answer. So much depends on speed, weight of object, angle of travel, etc. The Protec towing cover is not the thickest of material but on the law of averages I would guess that the chances of such a horrible event would be much less with a cover than without.

I would tend to disagree Stewart. The force needed to impart such damage on the plastic window is considerable and I doubt a piece of cloth [Kevlar excepted] would make any appreciable difference.
I considered buying a cover a while ago, but for protection from small dings and to reduce the fly build up. For these areas I still think they are excellent.

The lovely Jean at Jandi has just contacted me with the price for a new replacement window. Brace yourselves:

Window: £394.77 + £78.95 VAT = £473.72

Carriage: £20 + £4 VAT = £24.00

Total: £497.72

If the one I've ordered from Wales for £150 (see, it was a bargain) is OK then my no claims bonus remains intact. If it isn't and I have to buy a new one it will have to be an insurance claim.

The reason for my question regarding protection from a towing cover was because before they became popular, I photographed this one on a Swiss owned van at the 2015 Eribafest.

By his own admission the owner stated that it was a bit of a prototype but it did have quite a good padding layer. We have though about it several times since and Brian's accident is starting to focus our minds.

I use the bottom of my front window to see through the van ! I would like to investigate the possibility of a metal mesh cover...large enough gaps to see through but small enough to repel the stones ..or maybe a combination of both ?

That would be a minor drawback for us too as I am able to see a little through the van.

With a mesh cover your Eriba would look like the front end of a Police riot van.

So, the thin blue line gets a bit wider?
