National Trust.

As we are doing a UK Tour this year, we've been looking at the National Trust. Can anyone tell me if members are allowed into ALL National Trust properties etc FREE or are some at a reduced price?
The reason I ask is that if we join the National Trust for Scotland, it's a lot cheaper and it would seem that we would be able to get into all UK National Trust properties, but sometimes at a reduced price.

I have the old gits joint membership which is about £90 per annum. This gives free entrance to all UK properties including some places with no building but just a pay and display car park. Flashing one's card in the ticket machine produces a ticket without further payment.

The only exception I have found in many years is the Batteries on the Isle of Wight. The car park is part of a general money making exercise of shops, cafes and rides which charges £5 to park. The NT property is a further 1/2 mile away on foot. The only access for cars is probably blue badge or by public bus.

The old gits discount (25%) was only available if one had been a member of some years standing. Not sure if that still applies.

Yes, it does apply Ray but only for members of 5 years standing. They are looking for £120 for a joint membership.

As we envisage only using it for a few months this year we find that we can save more than £40 by joining the Scottish one (they do an over 60s discount immediately).

We will be touring England and Scotland this year so it might make sense to join the Trust but it isn't something that we will be using much in the future because We also have CADW in Wales which, I believe is not affiliated.

I'd be interested to learn if you and other NT members are able to get value from the membership against paying at the gate although you do mention free parking? A family member has been with the Trust for years as when living in Cornwall, it was the only way he could find an affordable space to park his car

This is really not surprising the Isle of Wight is supposed to be a holiday island but they give nothing away to holiday makers this includes parking, or anything else regarding the Island. I really don't understand why anyone would won't to come here to be fleeced. After the cost of the ferries the Island gives nothing away free , maximum prices are charged for everything

Joining the Scottish section gives you the full benefits that you get down south and the "Old Gits" discount applies from day one. I am told that joining the New Zealand equivalent is even cheaper for the same benefits.

I'd heard about the Scottish link, but if I'd never have thought about joining the New Zealand branch.

I'm sure somebody could work a Brexit link into this topic. Ideas please.

It used to be the case that the Scottish NT reciprocal arrangement covered the entry to NT properties in England & Wales but not the car park charges. Not sure if this is still the case though.

Some simple maths. At £90 joint membership = £45 per head.
Most properties are about £15 per head on the gate.
Thus anything over 3 visits a year is a bonus.

We have quite a few sites within an hours drive from home so we can visit just for a coffee and a quick whizz round the garden for no longer than 2 hours. If one was paying full price that would have to be all day to get money's worth.
On top of that we holiday in the UK in Aduriba and always include a visit to any NT sites in the area.

In conclusion, we certainly get our money's worth!

Good. That's nice to hear Ray. As we're doing a home tour this year we thought we'd give it a go to see how it works out.

Car parking is included with Scottish membership.

Sorry I am going to have a rant!

As a member of the National Trust (England & Wales) and as a volunteer for them I enjoy showing people from all over the world the property I volunteer at; Croft Castle Herefordshire.

All National Trusts are charitable organisations and do good work in preserving national heritages. To do this work they have to raise funds and (in the case of England & Wales) relies on the good will of many volunteers.

To do this work membership and entrance fees are a key source of income and set at a rate that is acceptable against the number of properties maintained.

England and Wales NT has over 500 historic properties and 600000 acres of land and 600 miles of coast (including large part of the Pembrokeshire coast) to look after.

In contrast Scotland has 130 properties and 180000 acres of land to look after so they have far less of a financial responsibility and hence there membership is cheaper than England and Wales.

The National Trust Associations have a reciprocal arrangements to allow each other's members have benefits of membership in each other's areas. This is done as a benefit of membership and not a way for some people to get a cheap option!

I know it is a fault of the National Trusts not to tighten this up by making proof a residency a requirement of membership, instead they are relying on the good will and conscience of their members to support their national trust.

So I would urge anyone to be honest and support the National Trust of their area, not to go out and get what they can for their benefit!!

Rant over

The membership loophole for NZ non residents has been closed due to abuse. International membership is now NZ$200 https://www.heritage.org.nz/get-involved...AC4E&_z=%20%20z

I notice an updated "re-rant."

The reason we don't wish to do this becomes apparent when you look at the map below which shows the number of NT places to visit in England and Wales.

national trust.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

As we've mentioned above, we don't often venture forth in the UK and the number of National Trust properties near to where we live or in Wales as a whole, is limited.

All the large scale properties appear to be in the hands of CADW.

cadw.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte) CADW Places to visit.

Incidently, if we wished to belong to CADW and the NT for England and Wales it would cost us in the region of £170.

So, for a few months only and only for this year, we intend to travel to the north of England and to Scotland so it's good sense economically to get the best deal possible without buying from outside the UK.
