An interesting question...............

............for a stormy day such as today.

As we sit at home watching and listening to the storm raging around us we can't help but think about insurance issues.

About 15 years ago we had a situation where a ridge tile came of a house roof and caused some major damage to our car. The big problem was that it was off our own roof.

When we submitted a claim to the car insurers (yes it was LV again) they said that as the tile was from our own roof they would not entertain the claim. However if it had come off a neighbour's roof they would.

We had to settle the claim for both house and car off our house insurance (not LV).

So, as we watch some tall trees blowing around at the bottom of our garden we wonder that if one should topple and land on our Eriba in an adjoining field, are our trees insured as part of the house policy? I don't remember having to declare the contents of our garden

The term "Act of God" goes through our minds and we wonder how car/varavan owners manage if a tree not belonging to them falls on their vehicles?

I would say yes, as long as an inspection does not reveal any obvious long term disease in the tree that you would have had a duty of care to deal with.
On a similar note, we have an issue with the next door neighbours fence. We moved in just over two years ago and whilst replacing our back fence had a quote for them done. Posts are at an angle and split through water ingress and rust, gravel boards are in a similar state and panels are rotten and falling out. If/when a panel departs company and decides to attack our cars, then I do not believe her house insurance will pay up and I'm dammed if I'll try and claim on my insurance policies.

We came home from a long weekend away on Wednesday (very long weekend 😂) to find we had had a power cut, luckily only a couple of hours so freezer all good. The power company then dug huge holes in the lay-by outside our house, trapping the car, they did make an access for us several hours later. The point of all this is they went off on Friday night leaving two big deep holes surrounded by barriers. The strong winds have flattened all the barriers. If someone is daft/unlucky enough to fall in overnight when it’s dark whose fault is it?The power company or “God”?
Just as a by the by, the wind is getting under the caravan cover and the Eriba is trying to take off, anyone else having that issue.

It's the power company's responsibility. I worked in that industry for 41 years and wind blowing barriers over is a long standing problem. In the early years of my career, when we were still nationalised, we used to employ street works inspectors to check open holes during stormy conditions and keep them safe. This stopped on privatisation to save money (make more profit) and they trust to luck now, God has nothing to do with it.
