I'm just going to see if there are tunnels from Plymouth to Roscoff and Hook of Holland to Harwich.

As someone who spends a lot of his life in a boat, the thing that struck me is the sheer skill of this ferry boats staff. To even consider coming alongside a dock in those conditions makes me feel weak.

It was Calmac Arran to Ardrossan a week past Friday. I had a friend on it. He reckoned the crossing was a bit choppy. Amazingly it loaded and returned to Arran on the Friday evening. The captain and crew correctly won a lot of praise. The clip was filmed by a lorry driver returning home to Arran. He said he was used to it.

Made me seasick just watching it, reminds me of a crossing we did 30odd years ago Roscoff - Plymouth we have never done that crossing since

We had a similar experience on the same crossing, 25 years ago. Left Roscoff at around 9:30am and as soon as it hit the open see it felt like the boat was going to keel over. We and all our kids were very ill apart from the youngest who was quite content on rocking horses, slides etc in the kiddies play area.

Most staff were ill too and they ran out of paper towels. After about 3 1/2 hours on what should have been a 6 hour crossing, I was celebrating the fact that we were over half way only for the Captain to announce on the Tannoy that they were going to be an extra hour on the journey due to the rough seas.

Like you we didn't use that crossing again until quite recently when we heard that they now run a much bigger boat.

That old ferry was notorious. What i don't understand is this. If you're sitting in the canteen and you're going to be sick, why just sit there? Why not flee to the loo? People stay put, making the most disgusting barfing noises into paper bags while others are trying to eat . Grrr.

I think the old ferry only had one loo for each gender. Also escape to the outside decks was not on as the boats are on lock down during stormy weather.

Although we've not experienced first hand, the incidents you speak of Islay, the lack of enough seating was also a problem, so people who managed to get a seat in the canteen stayed put for fear of losing it if they left it. We have quite a funny story along those lines but I'll save it for another time. It involves an Englishman, a Welshman and a hint of Scottish too.

Crikey lockdown!! I must have been locked out then on deck the whole journey with eldest probably about 4 years old,sat on my lap both puking our hearts out, at one point the chair I was sat on decided to go sideways, I was heading for one of the sluice points pushing the boy away from me, I would have gladly gone over board at that point! The boat closed down at one point not enough staff, too ill, to keep restaurant and shops open according to people later

Roger, they still sit and barf in the canteen on the new ferries!
