Towing with a Tiguan

I just wondered if anyone was towing with a Tiguan fitted with an electronically released tow bar that could possibly answer the following.

Is there ample clearance between ball and bumper for the alko hitch?

Does it allow for level towing? My current Westfalia tends to tow nose up no matter how much I load the car.

Did you have to remove the paint from the ball?

And finally when the tow bar is retracted is the ball facing up or down, any issues with rust?

Regards

Ray

I have a VAG electronically released tow ball on my Audi A3. I note you allready have a Tiguan but do not believe you can have this set-up retro fitted if that is what you may be thinking of.
I see no reason why VAG would not set your vehicle up any different to mine, as they have a European Standard that must be worked to, so:-
I have no clearance issue with the bumper.
I strongly suspect a slightly "nose up" stance would continue as this seems fairly common with your height of vehicle. It was the case with my [same floor pan as your Tiguan] Touran and Yeti. This is especially the case on vans a few years old as I believe they settle on the suspension over time, but I believe you have a newer van.
You will need to remove the paint.
The ball when retracted does rust as the standard VAG cover is a slotted affair. This winter I replaced it with a standard rubber Alko job, smeared with grease. When I got the van out to tow it for service in mid February the ball after a quick wipe with a white spirited rag was clean and rust free.
The built in 13 pin electrics socket in the side of the ball is a delight to use, no more stretching underneath.
The break-away cable mount is easy to access.

If you were thinking of this ball for a new vehicle it is definetly the way to go, and at about £800 factory fit a fair price.

Congratulations. Diesel or petrol. I ask because I made the change from a 2.0L diesel Yeti to a 1.5L petrol A3 and I am very surprised at how well the engine performs. It is far more flexible, pulls strongly and has near as dammit same economy.

I tow with a Tiguan mark 1 fitted with a removable (not electronic) towbar. The Tig tows our 2017 van completely level. You do need to remove the paint from the ball but because ours is removable we don’t need a cover. I’ve always coveted a fully electronic version, especially in the winter months but our set up is very easy to use. Retrofitted with electrics wired back to the main board was around £450.

I bought one from Skoda to be retro fitted. Not cheap but excellent.

Did they fit the electrics okay, such that the fridge works and the battery charges whilst the ignition is on?

Towed my 530 with a 2014 Tiguan with factory fitted retracting towbar for 3 years. My daughter has the VW now. No problems at all other than the car being a little high making the van slightly nose up however I have exactly the same issue with my new Mercedes GLC. The towball had a plastic cover which I fitted when retracted so never had any rust issues

They sent it to the best towbar specialist in Glasgow and it was fitted with full functionality. Make sure you purchase the full electrical kit.

I tow a troll with a mk2 Tig with factory electric lowball. No bumper clearance issues but does tow a bit higher at the front although this has never caused me any problems. I just slather on the vaseline when not towing and clean it off with paper towel followed by brake cleaner spray. No rust problems.

Crackin idea, why didn't I think of vaseline, it's a dam sight cleaner than the grease I use. It's on tomorrows shopping list.
