Whale pump when 'off grid'

Sorry if this is a bit complicate but I hope someone can explain. In our 2018 540 Troll, before the taps will pump water you have to turn on the electrics (switch on the side of the wardrobe), turn on the white switch (switch inside the locker below the back window) and turn on the black switch (on the side of the seat locker on the same side as the wardrobe. (Our previous Eriba only had one switch!!). We don’t have an on-board tank but use a water tank with a whale pump outside.
Now, when connected to the mains electricity the whale pump performs sensibly. Turn the tap on and water runs, turn the tap off – water stops and whale pump cuts out. But when using the leisure battery 12v supply – the tap is turned on and the water runs. Turn the tap off, water stops but the whale pump goes on buzzing and only stops when you turn that small black switch off. OK, so not much of a problem but a bit of a pain turning it on and off every time you want to fill a kettle when off grid. Any answers/remedies, please?

It sounds like you have a pressure switch system (as opposed to tap microswitches).

The pressure switch will either be a separate unit, in-line with the pipe from the back of the water inlet housing:

...or it may be integral to the housing itself:

Each has an adjuster to set the pump operation when taps are opened and closed.

The problem you are experiencing is due to a voltage drop at the pump when not on mains hookup which is causing a slight drop in pump pressure.

When you're off-grid and the pump refuses to switch off you need to adjust the pressure switch setting - just a quarter of a turn or so anti-clockwise should do it.

(Whale have introduced an auto-adjusting inlet housing which compensates for voltage differences).

OK so the Whale pump inlet looks like this. Do we have to take the middle blue bit out to get at the pressure adjustment switch. (Sorry I'm a dead loss when it comes to technical!!) Thanks for the help so far.

No the pressure adjustment switch is on The inside of the caravan. You could then do with looking online at the whale switches and their installations to find how to adjust the pressure. The last thing you want is to adjust it the wrong way and it won’t stop running water that is.

Thank you. Sorry to be dim but I can't see it. There seems to be nothing on the inside wall behind the whale pump on the outside! I was presuming that the rest of the whale pump socket was between the outside wall and the inner - and therefore was not visible. (The van is a 2018 Troll). Any other places I should look?

I'm sure we'll be able to work out whereabouts you'll find the housing inside the van if you post a picture showing the full side of the van where the housing is fitted.

I suspect you'll find it poking out of the wall behind the gas heater at the bottom of the wardrobe.

That's where I'd put it if I didn't want anybody to tinker with it.

Found it! Hiding in plain sight. I finally lined up the outside with the inside and realised that it wasn't directly under the window but nearer the wardrobe next to the battery! Using a torch helped. Now I do feel stupid. Anyway now we know what to do and to what we'll have a go. Thanks for being patient!
