Shouldn't the paint finish have been removed from the tow ball it's going to b***er up the friction pads on the hitch.
We were told to have the tow ball back to bare metal before we collected our van in 2007 or has the accepted wisdom been revised in the light of new evidence?

Cor. I dunno. Eyes like a robber's horse
Kevin says guilty as accused. It was pointed out to him after the event. So don't forget to get the paint off your balls and forever keep them clear of dirt and grease.

I've got four children I've needed robber's horse eyes and those ones in the back of my head too!

Watching that video still brings me out in a cold sweat. I'd never towed anything before and the thought of towing the Troll from Dorset to Bangor, north Wales was pretty daunting.
We did stay in South Lytchett Manor that evening, which was a great decision as it allowed me an initial short tow before the drive home.
And yes we did make a classic beginners mistake of not taking the paint off the towball. I'm sure I've made many others since as well. Four years on and I'm still learning :-)

Does anybody else use one of these. I cut a piece of 10mm plywood to drop over the tow neck on the car so the bumper is protected from being bashed by the caravans to hitch. The two round blobs are disc of self adhesive rubber that in turn protect the bumper from any roughness on the plywood.

We use one of these:- Werbung: https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/22017008965?iid=264726616575
but at first, it "bothered" the reversing censors on the car. The tow bar fitter had to gently reshape it to shut it up. No problem over the years since fitting.

WE have a removable tow ball so Randa's idea is not for us. I like Colin's idea.
However, I prefer a wireless rear-view camera, place this in the rear window of the car to hitch up, then place it in the rear window of the van to use as a rear-view mirror whilst towing. (Note it is powered from a permanent 12v supply, not the reversing light supply)

It is also a mistake to put the hitchlock (or anything else) on the ground whilst hitching up. It is just an invitation to forget it. They can also be invisible when you do your final look around before driving off. I one drove off with the hitch lock on the drawbar cover. Amazingly it was still there when I pulled in at a services 40 miles away.
