The gas bottle cover has these markes on it which are alwys there and I feel they are near some rivets or fixings and of recent repairs before we bought her and it looks like corrosion. They are all along the bottom edge. Any ideas?

I wanted to add another picture but can't see how. It gives the view of all of the puzzles.

The corrosion looks typical of water penetrating the protective coating on the alloy and then spreading by capillary action. The damaged area at the bottom of the door looks to be where it has entered.

I don't know what the answer is. Normally it would be a case of rubbing down to remove the corrosion and then resealing with some sort of lacquer but the pimply surface of the alloy would make that difficult.

Does anyone else have any knowledge of this or suggestions for making good?

Wenn Sie hier auf Links zu eBay klicken und einen Kauf tätigen, kann dies dazu führen, dass diese Website eine Provision erhält.

We have had this 'aluminium worm' on previous Eribas and, as Aaron Calder says the treatment involves removing the lacquer, removing the tarnish, polishing and re coating.
A simpler solution would be a suitable 50th wedding anniversary present like this on ebay...191164692633

You could remove the gas locker door, easy to do, and take it to a vehicle spray workshop, use a local guy rather than a main dealer, the aluminium is only a sheet and they can easily remove the oxidisation? and then respray with clear laquer, thats if you want the hassle of a proper job ;-)

Alternatively because it is just a piece of sheet aluminium, get them to replace it, possibly cheaper option anyway

Thanks to all and sundry. Will discuss and decided, as usual.

It does seem to be at regular spaces along the bottom and that was my thoughts on fixings, but maybe not.

You can buy clear cellulose lacquer in aerosols at any car accessories shop. It's used as a topcoat on modern paint finishes.

If you use fine wire wool the finest I use is 4 nought thats 0000 just to give you an idea of how fine that is you can polish glass ie a windscreen with it, and people do.

Ebay is a good source of wire wool in all grades

As the ali is dimpled and silver, I think I could wire wool it but is the silver likely to come off too?

Isn't the 'silver' the natural colour of the polished aluminium?
