Putting your own fly screens into awnings

Hi everyone

Just a thought this morning as I was in the shower. Kath is one of those poor people who gets bitten often by flying things and the bite swells up horribly. She got one a few days ago on the seafront at Rossall and the bite on the back of her calf has swollen like an apple. Fortunately she has all sorts of things to help deal with it but prevention is the key.

As I posted last week we took delivery of a Swift Vareo 260 Low awning and we are pleased with it so far. It is a budget awning and so doesn't have all the things that you would expect on an Isabella or an Outwell. One of these is that although it has two opening doors and the front canopy rolls up there are no fly screens provided. At dusk if we sat in this Kath would be fresh meat for the biters & blood suckers, unless everything was fastened.

This got me thinking about getting some fly screen material and using Velcro to attach it to the awning in an attempt to keep the biters out whilst allowing some fresh air in.

The question is has anyone on the Forum done something like this ? If so how difficult was it to do and how successful was it? We have some experience of velcro and awnings puttins some into our Kampa Pop Air to make the front curtains neater.

Any help or suggestions welcome!

Yes Mike, we have used one that we bought from Lidl who sometimes stock them for around £7.00.

They look very much like this :- Fly screen
After using it on the back door for our house we eventually converted it to fit the Eriba door. Home created door fly screen.
The quality of the material is good, the magnetic snap shut and weighted bottoms are good, the sticky backed velcro is the weekness and perhaps should be sewn on to the tent fabric. We stapled ours to the wooden door frame but also added a full length velcro strip so that the whole screen can be removed.

Hi Randa

Obviously great minds..............Thanks for replying

We also have one of these Lidl things for the patio door that I bought on a whim and never used. It was seeing this (still in its packaging) under the stairs on Friday that started me thinking in the shower this morning.

We have the Hymer fly screen already in our Troll door as part of the package when we bought it and use it all the time.

What I am thinking of doing is trying to get some fly screen material fitted by using Velcro on one of the side doors on the swift 260 awning. Now I have seen what you have done I think I will have a play with our Lidl screen to see what I can do. If it works I will post a photo.

Cheers

We have the Kampa Air pro awning and thinking of trying to fashion something up. There are velcro loops inside the awning so perhaps a lightweight bar with screen material would do the trick. The ones from Lidl/Aldi are quite cheap but the trouble is the awning door is much wider at the bottom so perhaps joining two screens together might be an option. We will also have a play around with it this week and see what we cam come up with.

Mike,
is mozi proofing your Sunncamp really possible. The little bligthers can get in anywhere.
We use a citronella oil burner which I believe does help, but better still is a good spray of "Avon Skin So Soft" on any exposed body parts.
And just incase, we carry cheap supermarket hay fever/antihistamine tablets and take one.

Hi Colin

I sometimes think in a strange way that you and I have had some very similar life patterns....!

Because Kath is so prone to bites and them going bad we have all of those things that you mention. She has told so many friends & acquaintances about Skin so soft that I think she kept Avon in business.

She has some great cream from Greece which takes the swelling down quicker than most and our sons future mother in law who also suffers has suggested something from Scotland that is supposed to work.. It is made worse by the fact that I rarely ever get bitten.

We once camped in a smart Berghaus inflatable tent at Culzean Castle near Ayr and we had a lovely pitch overlooking the Isle of Aran. It was great until about 7.00 and you could see all our neighbours start to zip up, so we followed . Within ten minutes swarms of midges came in across the fields as the sun started to go down. kath's idea of some kind of nightmare.

You might be right about the Swift being non-moz proofable but I will have a play to se what I can do.
