Eriba and Thule Caravan Superb

Hello guys,

I am a happy owner of the new Eriba Touring 540. And I happy to become part of the Eriba Folk community.

I've been searching forums and the internet for a while but no useful results. Thus I am asking here...

Is there anyone here who has Thule Caravan Superb bike rack mounted on an Eriba? I saw several pictures (attached) of this bike rack mounted. And its obvious that there must be some additional brace/strut under the metal cover. I have some idea how to make it. But before I start I am looking for any photos of this from downside... Is there anyone who could share some photos of this from the downside?

Thanks a lot!

Welcome Tom, the carrier you are interested in is a fairly new and special bit of kit, with some ironwork underneath.
I would advise you have a look at this thread as an alternative The simplest (and cheapest?) front-mounted bike rack fitting.

Hi Tom and welcome to Eribafolk

We can see the immediate problem with this rack as it's demonstrated here on an "A" Frame towing arrangement where has an Eriba Touring relies on a "T" Pole towing bar. https://www.thule.com/en-gb/caravans-acc...andard-_-307130

It's obviously do'able as can be seen by Tom's photograph.

Hello guys. Thanks a lot for your quick answers.

@Colin, thanks a lot. I read that thread before but did not find any solution for this rack. Unfortunately, the solution with Thule 970 Express does not work for us since we carry many different bikes with different frames. And some bikes do not fit with this rack because of suspension for example :-(

@Randa, thanks a lot as well. That's what I know :-) The point is that at least some dealers have a solution for this - as demonstrated in the photo I shared above. I will keep searching and developing.

Anyway, I have some ideas. I will share everything I find as well as the final solution here.

I think your best bet is to try an Eriba dealer. The part number of the factory fit is 37661, which goes on to say, Drawbar bike carrier for 2 bicycles, max. load 50 kg, 130 x 45 x 79 cm (suitable for E-bikes). It weighs10kg and as a factory fit costs £350.
I cannot see why it would not be suitable for fixing by yourself as I'm guessing you would be looking at some form of spreader palte that is folded to shape arond the drawbar and bolts through.

Thanks Colin.

To be honest, the Thule bike rack was originally installed by Hymer dealership here in Prague. But what they did is pretty much a disaster. They just took the Thule rack and attached it to the tow bar. The result was damaged metal plate and plastic covers on the corners of the caravan after just a few days in use. After this experience, we agreed that they will replace damaged parts and give us some compensation. (just to be fair - there is just a few Eribas in Czech rep - they sell one per year maximum, so they don't have real experience with this type).

I decided to do it on my own. It's basically what you propose. Here are first pictures...

But I am also searching for pictures of the original Hymer solution for inspiration.

I understand now Tom. At first I thought the original photo was of one you had seen and wanted to repeat this on your own van.
I'm trying to remember if the original underneath metal work was a long strip of rectangular section steel about 80 x 8, folded with a u section that went under the drawbar. The square box section you have cut should work as it looks like you have a good snug fit around the drawbar. You obviously know what yoy are doing and I'm guessing the black bottle is some form of thread lock.

Hi Colin, thanks for the info. I guess I can imagine how the original solution looks like.
Yes, the black bottle is Bison Metal Lock. I use nuts with plastic "locks" but also this glue to be safe.
Here are the pics of the final solution. There is still some room for improvement, but so far it works perfectly. Costs are app. 500 CZK -> 23 USD in material and 5 hours of my time (I enjoy doing this kind of stuff from time to time :-) )
The great thing (on top of the solid solution for the rack) is that we can now step on the metal cover.
