Hello everyone
We picked up our Eriba 320 GT a few weeks ago and went straight off for 3 nights in a campsite getting to know the ropes. We had read so much about how to tow a caravan, how to park etc we were terrified but in the end it all turned out ok and we had a great start. We had lots of compliments about how pretty the van is !
We intend to do as many road trips as we can and we are starting with Scotland in early September for about 3weeks. We are doing the north coast 500 but by car, having stored the van in Inverness.
We have a few very naive questions
- what do you do when you want to fuel up on a motorway or anywhere else for that matter – do you just go to the normal pumps and take up more than your fair share of spaces?
- and where do you park in a motorway service station - with the truck drivers !?
- we are thinking about getting a roof box on the car as there is not a huge amount of space in the van, is there any downside to that ?
- any other tips about touring scotland?
Thank you for taking the time to read this and we look forward to meeting other Eriba folk soon
Chris, Teresa (and Heidi the name given to our van by my wife !)

Hi Chris
We haven’t come across a petrol station we can’t use yet. Just take up an extra space if you have to. Almost all motorway service stations have a caravan section, usually near or sometimes part of the truck stop. We have a roof box and use it for the tables, chairs, barbeque, etc. Basically all the stuff you don’t want rolling around inside your pride and joy. It doesn’t seem to do anything you fuel consumption so you downside that I can think of.
Being a Scot, I will of course say that all of the country is beautiful but do travel up through Glencoe and all points north of there. Sutherland is pretty and if you are doing the east coast detour down the road through Braemar which is much nicer than the A9. Don’t visit the Trossachs in July unless you don’t mind midges! And avoid Skye unless it is the off season unless you want to sit in a long line of motorhomes.
My favourite touring months are May and September. The colours in September are spectacular. I could go on but just travel around. Everywhere is worth a visit!

Welcome, and as above about filling up with fuel, but avoid motorway service stations only because of the cost. I must admit though that generally we can get to most places on a tank full unless we are off to France. 35/40 mpg will get you a long way.
If you are considering a roof box for just the two of you then you must be carrying way to much. Towing a Familia with a Yeti I managed to carry all I needed, including a fridge and freezer in the car, large awning, satelite dish, food boxes and 150L of wine.
