Flexing bed cushion in our Troll

We have been away for a number of nights recently and found that the thin bed cushion under the rear window flexes downwards when rested on. This means we have a slightly narrower bed than we originally thought.

I have looked at adding additional support under this cushion, but am guessing that I cannot fix into the interior skin of the body under the rear window.

Has anyone a solution for this issue?

Alan

We had the same problem with the bed on our Troll but we made the bed up opposite to the usual way and found that the cushion was dropping down at the front I’m also looking at strengthening/supporting it.

I will let you know if I can sort it without to much trouble, once we swapped ends didn’t have any problem that’s probably down to the way we sleep 😴

Are you talking nearly new or old Alan?

We don't have the problem with ours but it is mounted on a fairly thick ply and if memory serves, the upright section of the rear narrow locker is braced to the back of the van at its centre point.
I'll have a look tomorrow.

OK Alan.

These are a few photos of what lies beneath our long skinny cushion.

Picture one shows a central timber bridging bar (excuse the clutter underneath as we rarely go under there )
Picture 2 shows an additional aluminium bridging bar near to each rear corner.
Picture 3 shows the 6mm? plywood underside of the skinny cushion.

You haven't said what year your van is but ours is a Troll 530 from 1999.

Randa
ps photos are from difficult angles as we are currently living in ours so loads of junk.

Our van is a 2015 Touring version.
There is no support at the centre of the cushion which slips down at the front behind the panel. There is some additional support at the ends with the stubb ends of a 2x1 strut in each case.

What I am thinking of doing is adding two lenthes of 2x1. One cut to fix to the back of the front panel, and another rebated into the two end panels as close to the body as possible. This will still enable a small amout of storage under this cusion.

We are going away on Monday so I had to do something about the cushion today.

I screwed a piece of 2x1 at the top and back of the front panel so the cushion will rest on it being, careful to use screws the right length, but it still flexed but to a lesser degree.

As the back was not supported I added another timber by cutting two notches at the ends of the side panels as I didn't want to screw into the bodywork
By using the waste timber screwed to that piece of 2x1 I was able to locate the back timber securely.

This timber was not as thick as the one on the front and does still flex a little so I may need to add a vertical piece down the floor in the middle, but the seat cushion feels much more secure now.
