Dreaded water ingress - advice required please. (Update)

Just packing up from short trip to Buxton and flat cycling on various local trails when we noticed the bottom corner and edge of the duvet was wet. Closer inspection of our 2005 Triton 430GT showed a small drip of water coming from the edge of the table support strip at the rear of the 'van. I suspect that water may be entering from the waist joint but nothing obvious on the outside! It had been raining the day before and overnight. Has anyone else experienced this problem and if so how was it resolved?

We live in the Harrogate area and getting to AL or JandI for repair is a double long round trip. Is there anyone nearer capable of repairing/sealing the leak?
If the whole of the waist band had to be taken apart , resealed and restored what might be the likely cost? Any help would be gratefully received. Thanks.

I've not experienced it myself but quite often it's the rear third brake light housing that's the problem.

Forum member and caravan engineer JohnE is about 100 miles away and would be my preffered option for repair. Somebody may be ble to advise on somebody closer who also has an excellent reputation.

Hi Randa,
Thanks for your speedy reply. Never thought of looking that far up. Just been out to inspect and the sealant around the light does look decidedly iffy...I suppose if water gets in here it would flow around the window frame and on to the caravan frame to which the table support is screwed. Is the remedy to take out the third brake light and reseal or is a specific preformed seal required? Will get onto this ASAP and let you know the outcome. MOST grateful for your suggestion.

Hi Colin, Thanks for your speedy advice. Will try Randa's advice first and if that isn't successful I will try to get more details from you if I may?

This picture shows the leak we had in our Triton that I traced to the high-level brake light. I ended up replacing the unit making sure it was well sealed in place with the correct mastic.

When replacing the light unit (if that is your problem) try to find the Hella part number from their online catalogue and find a supplier rather than ordering from an Eriba dealer. It will be substantially cheaper.

Thanks very much for your reply. The photo shows similar water ingress pattern although ours is on the left so I have high hopes of the brake light housing being the problem area. Will try to source a replacement Hella light unit as you suggest. Thanks again.

The Dreaded Water Ingress - update

As was suggested the high level rear brake light was given a severe "coat of looking into". A new Hella light unit was acquired at about half price on ebay. The old unit was removed but in several pieces as it easily cracked; perhaps some cracking had occurred before removal. I found slight evidence of water in the old unit bits. The wood on the lower edge of the light slot appeared damp on one side. The old mastic was removed and the new light unit was fitted and resealed.
I have tested the installation using a hose pipe and it has rained today. There there has been no sign of the leak so far. So, fingers crossed that the repair will stand up to the severe rain predicted for the weekend.

Many thanks again to those members whose advice pointed me in this promising direction.
