Damp.

Gutted just had a service and I have got quite a bad damp problem. The evidence is clearly there. I have only had the van a week. One part of the damp, I was told was water marks from a leak, that just needed painting. That is actually 50% on his damp meter. The other part, the wall by the back window and side windows is clearing cracking and warped.
Not sure what to do really as I am £5k out of pocket plus getting on for. £1k on getting caravan towed to me, and the service I has today which also had other problems with the brake shoes and regulator on piston.
Do I sell it? Obviously I would include the damp report etc. Or is there anyone in here who repairs these issues, who could give me a quote. I am
near Southampton.

Unfortunately he is about a 4 1/2hr drive from yours, but well worth it.

Hi Andy. Reading your comments on Facebook and on here, I can tell you're really worried about this but if you have bought a "pup" then there's not a lot you can do about it so don't let it get you down.

Looking at the dampness chart that your engineer gave you, the readings are dramatically up and down and without another 1994 Eriba to compare it with I can understand your concern.

What I would do is wait until the weather improves (not long now surely) and take a fresh look at it. As the videos I posted on Facebook for you suggest, checking caravans for damp/water ingress isn't an exact science. I'll repeat the videos on this post for the benefit of others.

Do you know how and where your Eriba was stored for the past 12 months? It can't have been used that often because of Covid. Has it been covered or stored inside or outside in the elements?

I'll be honest with you, I've never had our 1999 van damp tested in the 11 years we've owned it and although I did buy a damp meter a few months ago, our daughter-in-law immediately "borrowed it" as she was looking to purchase a house. We've not seen it since.

It's only a guess but worse case scenario, probably changing the window gaskets and again, although I've not done it myself, plenty of folk on here have done and will hopefully add a post on here to try to put your mind a little more at rest.

Andy, reply no2 to your problem.

To be blunt, sh*t happens. At present I'm on the end of a £12K stitch-up by a cowboy builder that I have to pay for, but I've got a pulse and the lump they dug out of my neck a few weeks ago has proved not to be a problem.

Now back to your van on a positive note:
- At the age you have bought a normal van would be landfill, so that's one good point.
-Second is you know what is wrong with it.
- Thirdly it can be fixed even if it is a pain
- I'm guessing you have funds available as you originally went after a new van
- You will end up with a good van you know, that you can use
- equally you will be able to sell it on with confidence
- you may lose some money, but no more than if you had bought a or 6 year old van and found you sold it on after a year or two
- you may actually not lose anything when you sell in a couple of years time.

It's easy for me to say these things as the van is not mine, but as an outsider this is the reality of the situation.

Thanks all. I am now going to get a second opinion from an MCEA mechanic tomorrow. I have been speaking to the previous owner all day trying to negotiate something. I have managed to get a £2k refund. Dependant on what the guy says tomorrow. I will put the £2k towards fixing of all the issues, maybe even another £1k of my own. Otherwise I will probably list it on eBay auction with all known issues. Praying for the former.
I don’t think the van has been used for a few years. It has been sat on their drive with no cover. I have now got a cover on it. ( although there is a big hole
where the chimney is. I have put the piece that should cover the draw bar over the hole
till I get a new one( if I keep her)

Right Andy. Here we go. This young man John Poptop320 posted this in 2014 and the good news is that he is still active on this forum so I'm sure will be able to point out anything that you're not sure about.

regarding the hole by the chimney, hopefully this just means the chimney cowl is not fitted. This is a grey plastic cowl which screws into the chimney. This is normally removed prior to fitting a cover and the hole temporarily bunged up with a tennis ball or similiar to stop the cover wearing at that point.
You should also have an extension which fits between the chimney and the cowl which is supposed to be used when the pop up roof is raised. This should be about 6" long.

If you havent got the cover you can them fairly easily.

I believe from Facebook that Andy has sold his Eriba.

He's taken a hard hit (asked £3000)
