We've been talking about getting a mover for our 1998 Triton 430. When I push nothing happens, so Yann has yo do all the work.......and we're not getting any younger. Are there any problems we should be aware of?

Apart from the price I cannot think of any.
I resisted since Eriba ownership started in 2003 until 2017. If you have the money then do it.
Reich seem to be the default choice and I'm pleased with my Easydriver 1.8 even if I think it is a bit slow. I think all manual wind on units now come with "cross actuation", meaning you can wind the thing on from either side. I avoided the auto engage based on the extra cost and having seen two locked on and owners having to get the spanners out.
I have found one big advantage that nobody told me about. When trying to get the van level across the axle we used to pull/push it onto a levelling ramp with the car and chock it. When it came to leave it was often a fight to get the chock out. This is no longer the case as a little mover engagement results enables the chock to be simply lifted in/out of the place.

Our last wobbly box had a mover and our Troll has a Reich with the cross axle, manual actuation. I wouldn't be with out one now, they make caravanning so much more enjoyable IMHO.

When we looked for our Eriba we specifically wanted a mover as our driveway is very tight between us and next door and has a slight incline . With the mover I can roll it onto the drive without any difficulty and get it to about 3 inches from the next door wall so I can still open the door. Needless to say being able to unwind the mover drive wheels from one side is a must.

I assume you already have a battery and charge system.

We have a mover on our Troll, had one on the Triton too. Wouldn’t be without it. However our van is a Dutch import, it doesn’t have a charging system. For short breaks the battery is enough to power the mover, for anything longer we carry a smart charger which we plug in to top the battery up every so often. It’s obviously not as simple as a charging system but we weren’t too happy with the cost of fitting one. Call us miserly but “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. The point being that you need a battery for a mover but you can manage without a charging system.

Thank you all. It's pricey but we would probably have to give her up if yann wasn't able to push. 😥Also, the garage where she lives is great, but there's a concrete lip we have to push her over and its more than difficult. We have to push her in front of the door, reattach the car to reverse her in.....very narrow...... so it will be worth it.

Fitting a mover to my Troll was a bit of a revelation. As you know (Islay), I often travel on my own and some wet grass or gravel or bumpy ground are now negotiated with ease. I bought the special brackets from Midland Motor Movers (I think?) and then fitted the movers myself. It wasn't a huge job. Where I was really lucky was that I managed to buy the mover set up, second hand, from an advert on here, something that wouldn't often happen I'd dare guess... I was also lucky in that as an import (Dutch) van, it was somewhat unusual in that it already had a battery fitted...

You might have to save up, but I say, go for it and save Yann all that effort...

hi Islay

We also have a Reich mover on our Troll - it sounds like John's (#3 above). We couldn't live without it and the older we get the more important it is.

We had a strange experience at the Crystal Palace site when the mover stopped working properly and we had to get the warden and a neighbour to help us move our van as we were on a slight slope on a hardstanding. We just couldn't move the Troll safely on our own. It turns out that we were pitched very near the massive Crystal Palace TV mast and the warden reckoned that on some days it seemed to somehow make the remote control signal malfunction.

This episode convinced us of how much we needed the mover. Also we have a little lip as you describe having in your garage on our drive and it may as well not be there with the mover, it just glides over it.

Our summary would be pricey but invaluable.

Thank you all. Yes, it's a big budget when comparing to a year's fuel etc but I think we'll be much more relaxed. We had never admitted to each other how stressed we felt on arriving at her garage, knowing what a falafel it would be to get her in! When i think about what some people spend on holidays, it's really a modest expense as it will last for years.

You could see it as an investment too, an investment in your health and well being and an investment to your 2nd home. What's not to like

We dropped her off at the caravan place this morning. Very exciting as we're not supposed to travel more than 10kms from home without a very good reason.....didn't get stopped by the gendarmes!
Do you have any tips for looking after the battery? We've never had one before so are a bit dim about it all. It comes with an "intelligent" charger....

If you have an intelligent charger then you have no need to worry. Just leave your van plugged into the hook up and forget.
