You're right John.............the thing that sticks in my mind was how many of them wouldn't start in the rain. WD40 was my constant companion.
I had a lovely Triumph 1300 TC that was the best car in the world until there was any damp in the air.
The other thing I remember is points going out of setting and having to re-set them with a fag packet in an emergency. Oh and using Chinese chip shop containers to repair the bodywork on my girlfriend's treasured Mini
Those were the days for many things but not reliable cars......!

The Sprint was a beautiful looking car and great to drive Cabbie.
Just a shame that you could start to use the bodywork to drain a pan of peas!

My first car was a 1978 Mini 1275GT. Followed not long after with an MGB Roadster which I still have 33 years later. My daily car is a Suzuki Jimny.
Then this might interest you John.

My first car was a 1966 Morris Minor, which I got after I passed my test in 1979. What an incredible difference to my current car, a 2019 Audi Q2 - thinking back, the advances in technology are phenomenal. My 27 year old son simply can’t believe that when we were children in the 60s and 70s, cars broke down so frequently that you never could tell when you set out if you would arrive at your destination without incident!

When I was growing up the next door neighbour had a works Viva HA van. It had a tow hook so we loaded up the trailer and set off for the tip. A mile or so out we heard a tshh noise and slowed down. That was when the trailer wheel passed us.
I can still remember the bloke on the pavement pointing his wall jumping over said wall. I burst out laughing in the back of the van. The neighbour who was driving likewise. Meanwhile dad was shouting it's not bloody funny. But it was.

Modern cars don't have anywhere near the same character as the older ones but I can't remember the last time I saw a modern ish car with gaping rust holes. It is probably a lot easier to get a set of newish wheels now that it was when I was in my teens. On the other hand I learned a lot about keeping my old wrecks going.
