John,
I did this on my previous van. I had already fitted an extra awning rail 110mm above the original so this gave a bit more theoretical height and just about enough clearance for the door to open. The job was a bit fiddly and you have to be 100% sure you have a waterproof seal on the mountings. It was not worth it and I would not repeat the task.

When we had our Familia I fitted them to the skirt rail to save drilling holes in the van. But we never used them as it is a bit hit and miss when fitted to the rail and the whole assembly didn't seem stable enough. We never found a location where putting the legs on the ground would have presented a problem.
Having had the canopy flip in a strong gust of wind just as we were packing up once, I wouldn't risk the wall plates again. That flip damaged the knuckle joint at one end which needed replacing and a new end fitting in the rafter tube. Make sure the feet are pegged down all the time or someone is hanging onto the leg. The plus side is all parts are available from Fiamma at not too outrageous a price.
Luckily, despite landing on the roof, the main tube did no damage to the Eriba.
We haven't fitted the wall plates to the Triton.

Colin,

Presumably they normally bolt on, but I know that Rose Awnings attach awning cassettes to Eriba Touring roofs using adhesive only and not drilling. Would those fitments stay put using just the sort of adhesive Rose use as that would do away with any risk of leaks?

I've often wondered about using that sort of fitting as I have a worry that one day a dog is going to bend an upright by dragging their tie-out lead against it. Having the upright out of the way against the van sounds a good alternative.

Also,if you positioned the fittings higher would you get more door clearance?
