Hi Monoboard
As Stewart says it is to ensure that the phones disperse above the pop top.
We don't use our gas heater much but always put it on just in case, as it is a diddle to screw on. Will try to put a photo of complete chimney on, as I take it off for winter sturage.

Thankyou for all your prompt reply's. I've only ever had my heater on for a few minutes in a morning usually & not had a lot of usage since i bought it of our local dealer with covid lock down. I've spoken to the dealer & there dropping an extension flue off for me, I'll need some steps or something to reach. I'll need to look tonight when i get home, depending on how close to the road wheel & body clearance but I've seen these folding tyre steps

I bought a cheap caravan step as used by owners of wobbly white boxes. This is also good for when feeding the awning into place and it has meant I do not need to cut a hole in our awning skirt as I do not use the built in step when the awning is fitted.

I have a 2015 320, I use a an extension for two reasons. One is to get the fumes above the canvas and also to avoid the fire been blown out on very windy days as the wind buffets off the canvas down the chimney and blows it out.
When I go on holiday I like to pop my top!

I've taken the same approach as Colin with the built in steps and awnings. Rather than cut a hole in the awning to be able to use the in built step, I bought a BWB step to use to get in and out of the van
Initially I bought a single metal built step but with my dodgy hips I found the step down put too much weight on my new hip joint. I ended up by a double metal step from Aldi and it works a treat being just below the door height.
This then doubles up as a step for Kath to stand on when we put the awning up. It really is sturdy and stable and is high enough for me to put the chimney extension tube up.
Result.......................

We had a similar dilemma about eight years ago while in the Netherlands.
Our plastic caravan step, bought only two years previously gave up so we had to search one out in a nearby town.
there was a nice looking one in a camping shop window costing about 16 euros or so but the shop was closed for lunch. However the supermarket next door was open so we did a food shop and also came away with a nice heavy duty plastic step from there costing only 7 euros or so. It also came packed with 24 bottles of beer as well and we've been using it ever since

Frankly, I'm surprised the step has lasted so long.
It's bright red and when we turn up at a lot of campsites, particularly the prestigious ones where there are many "posh" people in their twin axles and large Mo*******s" there are so many curtain twitchers looking at it with envy

We had a similar idea - but a wooden Orange box (no, there are no oranges in it and it is painted white!). En-route we use it to store pitching items like wooden levelling blocks, power drill, EHU cable etc etc
Very handy and multi-purpose
