Dacia Duster tow car
in We've got it down to a T Wed May 19, 2021 3:22 pmby fishcultureman (deleted)
On the back of a recent post here on 'Choosing the right tow car' on anything Eriba related, has anyone any views as regards diesel Dacia Dusters as a tow car? Seen quite a few in France towing Pucks at least, but not sure about towing our 91 Pan Familia. The blue plate on our Eriba says 690 kg, 850 kg, 75kg. Im assuming this is the un-laden, laden and nose weight details in that order.
On a tight budget so looking at a 2013 to 2016 year. For those years, most I think are 1.5L engines with a maximum towing capacity of 1200kg. I would be going for a 4 x 4 type as the nose weight is 75kg also.
Views are very welcome.

Dacia kerbweights are around 1370kg for those years, so already up to 65% laden with one person and the car empty. all a bit light! Torque for most of these years is around 170, so not great.

I had a 2013 1.5L 4x4 diesel duster Laureate spec for my Familia 320, it pulled it no problems with plenty of low down torque. It was a superb car with a massive boot for my awning and chairs.
My van is plated at 1050kg but it was generally loaded at just over 900kg, it will pull your pan with ease. It used a Renault engine pumping out 240Nm ( the new dcis now have 260Nm) of torque and returned over 50mpg
The 4x4 has a 75kg nose weight and a 1500kg towing capacity.

PT,
From my spreadsheet of weights an average Touring van has about 110kg of cost options added, so the base weight of your 320 will be around 810kg and our average personal payload is about 110kg too. So if you're similar a 320 used in anger weighs around 920kg, give or take, not allowing for a mover or sun canopy. Still over its original MTPLM of 900kg though.
I had nothing to do on this hot afternoon
But to settle down and write you a line

You are about bang on the money with your calculations Andy , that's what I approximately came to as well after I methodically weighed all my basic items with the additional accessories such as the GT pack motor mover etc. I put the awning and chairs in the car to bulk up its gross weight. This was why I upgraded the MTPLM plate to 1050kg.

I always remember John (Poptop320) getting his Dacia Duster and having to face a little bit of ridicule from some quarters (not on here I hasten to add). To top it all the people poking the fun were Skoda drivers.
Not for the past 15 years or so but Skoda drivers had to endure the same ridicule previously before being taken over by VW. As John says, Dacia is now in the hands of Renault and the Duster has become a very popular tow car.

I admit to being no car expert Pete but at least the French still have a car industry.
When we travelled through Romania in 2019 the locals who were not driving horses and carts were to be seen in Dacia Logans and almost all of them were maroon in colour.

They are scoring very well Mr Pepe, better than our Audi.
I haven't got an Audi any more.
There's almost certainly no logic to it, but I wouldn't have a French car if I won one in a raffle.
It might be some kind of weird automotive snobbery - which is something I suspect most of us are guilty of to some degree, otherwise we'd all just buy the cheapest car that did the job - or it might be a legacy from my dad, God bless him.
He wouldn't touch a French car with a dix pied pole, and once I was old enough to appreciate the difference between a Jensen FF and a Jensen Interceptor he forbade me from even thinking about getting a Renault or (and I can hardly even bring myself to type it) a Peugeot or he'd arrange to have me shot.
What can you do?

'Upgrade the MTPLM plate'? Always confused about this. I read somewhere that for small fee you can simply get a new badge/sticker and cert stating the upgrade without actually getting anything done to the chassis. Like living in denial or something. Interested to know how you went about that. ALKO upgrade I'm guessing.
