Coat hooks

I am looking at putting a couple of coat hooks left hand side of the door, does the steel frame carry on around from above the door frame? Is there a way of finding out where the frame is to get a secure fix?

Yes, it does, Alan.

Both my '01 and '05 540's had the same, rather unique style silver/grey plastic double hooks fitted. But the '05 one had a darn sight more than the '01. IIRC there were six pairs of hooks set around the van. Most were fitted at the seam point between roof and wall, obviously where the steel frame ran around the circumference but several were fitted to furniture, one pair being inside the washroom, another set on the outside above the front dinette seat and another on the exterior of the wardrobe, facing backwards. Obviously none of those three pairs were fitted to the frame as it didn't run in the furniture. I never unscrewed any to find out how they were fixed, i.e whether screwed straight into the wallboard or with a plug of some type. Since then the structure of the wallboard has probably changed and may not take so kindly to screws and it obviously depends on what is intended to hang from the hooks. A heavy weight will likely need the steel frame, a lighter item not so much.

I remember Jean of Jandi saying that the French factory used to grab a handful of hooks and decals and scatter them round the van in a random fashion and the number any particular van got was entirely down to how big a handful was grabbed from the parts bins. I suspect the German factory is more constrained.

Thanks for that John, The Troll I had seemed to have hooks lower down than the frame looks in the picture. Would this have been possible? The hooks always seemed quite secure.

I've owned three Eriba's with said hooks. They have either been attached to the steel frame that the awning/gutter trim is also attached to or the sides of cabinets. I would not attempt to fit them anywhere else.

Alan,
The steel frame obviously varies depending on the model/layout involved and apart from the door and gas locker frames there are the awning rail and the floor frame plus midrail and the window outlines plus their supporting frames and, of course, the fixed roof supports and edge frame. Like Colin I wouldn't attempt fitting anywhere on the wall covering except where there's underlying framework and the type of wallboard used for your furniture needs checking before fixing to that. Are we talking Current (post 2010, Early Century 2000 to 2010 or Heritage 2000 to 1990, Ancient 1990 to 1980, Knackered 1980 to 1970, or Lost in the Mists of Time (LITMOT) pre 1970?

If you enlarge this pic you'll see two double hooks a la 2005 Troll to the left of the doorframe. I'd forgotten about the bit of trim fitted to cover the join between
roof and wall.

I think you should be OK as I believe Hymer France we still using lightweight ply for the furniture in '08, though not having run an '08 I can't be certain. Are you getting matching hooks to carry on the look?

After our '05 540 we bought a 2012 Lunar Quasar Special which for some unknown reason had absolutely no hooks anywhere. We decided we needed a pair in the bathroom to hang bath towels and a pair just inside the door to hang keys and dog leads. I resolved to find hooks that looked as if Lunar had selected them as factory fit. Luckily the rest of the van's hardware was shiny chrome, so the selection was easy, a couple of relatively cheap standard B&Q items were perfect. I was gratified when Lunar launched their 2013 range which had hooks fitted and they were identical to my selection. In 2014 Lunar went esoteric and fitted designer hooks that matched new designer hardware elsewhere in the vans and they would have been harder to find.

I've never had much luck using sucker fixed stuff in caravans, if the surface is totally smooth you can get them to grip, but then they fall off when the inside gets hot and the flexible plastic/rubber 'sticker' goes all super pliable.
