Just wondered if anyone has bothered fitting a safe in an eriba just for passports, wallet, keys etc. And have they bolted through the floor & chassis ?
You wouldn't want to weaken your chassis either

I thought about one but realised it is far safer for valuables to be kept in the car.

We have one but on reflection when abroad you have to carry your passports with you, it is bolted through the floor.

Ours had one fitted by the previous owner. We got rid of it and keep valuables in the car too.

You could go for an under seat safe fitted in your car (if there's enough room) we had them fitted to our works vans. Out of site and quite secure.

Cant help feeling that spreading valuables around in both car and van is a better bet than a safe in either. There are plenty of nooks and crannies in both. We do however keep spare car keys in the van and van keys in the car.

I carry an envelope in the car with copies of all my docs, got caught out once in Spain without them and had the car impounded which cost me a couple of hundred quid to retrieve and a lot of hassle. My son suggested I put these on my phone as pics which is a good idea as well. But I agree that spreading valuables around in the car and van is a good idea.

Michael, I do something similar. I have a copy of emergency details and some accounts written down, photocopied and secreted in different places. Internet passwords are in a saved document e-mailed to self.

It is really sad we even have to think about having to hide your valuables! Honest hard working people saving all your lives to enjoy retirement caravaning/camping or what ever you decide to spend your hard earned on. For some scroat probably never worked a day in their lives to come and in one foul swoop wreck your holiday. Or am I wrong Morphy

Aha.

That explains it all. I thought all those words were some kind of puzzle, but it makes sense now.

Would it be rude of me to suggest that you double-check the intended recipients before pressing send?

Fortunately I believe thefts are very rare, or at least if you asked forum members I suspect the vast majority have not experienced one. Unfortunately we have.
We started our trips in tent, trailer tent and caravan in about 1998. First couple of years just in the UK but after that most abroad. In 2009 we had the front of our trailer tent awning slashed by an opportunist gang that went through a French site one night. They were looking for anything within reach. This site was booked through the C&MC, near Saumur in the Loire, Huttopia Saumur. Both the site and the C&MC knew this was an issue from previous years. I would not advise visiting this site
I'd say we feel safe on our travels, particularly so in France as the sites tend to be more remote and we pitch for longer. On longer pitches you get to recognise faces and look out for neighbours when they go out for the day, shopping etc. Having said that I do padlock and chain the bikes and sat dish as at £1,500 combined I think it irresponsible if I did not.
