Cycle Carriers for 2001 Eriba Triton

Morning everyone. We have just bought a 2001 Eriba Triton and would like to fix a suitable cycle carrier to it for 2 bikes. Is anyone able to advise on a suitable (preferably A-frame mount) carrier for this van, given its age? The official Eriba Drawbar Bicycle Rack (Part No 8501286) is only recommended for models from 2011 onwards. There is also the Thule Smart carrier but I am unsure of this would interfere with the opening of the front gas locker etc. Does anyone have any experience of cycle carriers for this model? Many thanks.

Welcome Paul. You will find all you need to know here:- The simplest (and cheapest?) front-mounted bike rack fitting. (5)

Thank you for digging this out for me Colin. However, this earlier discussion relates to fitting plates rather than to the cycle carriers themselves. I am specifically seeking advice on suitable makes and models of cycle carriers (either front or rear) for a 2001 Eriba Triton if anyone has any experience of this? Many thanks, Paul

Before putting bikes on your van I'd suggest you consider the weight implications. From the Hymer archive the payload of 2001 Tritons was between 180kg and 240kg depending on model. That's for a poverty spec van. If it's got a spare wheel and battery/charger the payload drops by 50kg. Mover= another 30kg. Electric boiler 3kg etc, it all adds up. Then consider that the average payload for a couple is about 110kg and you'll see that adding 10kg for a bike rack plus the bikes themselves could push the van over it's legal limit.

It is minus some fittings as it came with a previous van, there are some bits attached to the rack. I’m sure the missing fixings are easily available. We’re thinking £50 would be a reasonable price.

Paul,
no front mounted carrier has to my knowledge ever been made specifically for an Eriba of your age. You can it a Fiamma or Omni to the rear of your caravan but it is not an easy job and you must take care with the loading. I have fitted rear carriers to the 4 Eribas I've owned and the front plate on the last two.
The front plate with a Thule Express really is the way to go if your car can take the increase in noseweight unless you are very competent in the fitting or a rear carrier.

Thanks everyone for all your help with this. As there's clearly not an easy Eriba-based solution we have decided to put the bikes on top of the car instead using the cycle racks currently mounted on top of our camping trailer. This looks like the simplest approach, and is certainly a lot less expensive!
