Front top light filling with water

When I recently washed our 2015 Eriba Triton 430 I noticed the front top corner running light (front top left corner) was filling with water.

Looking for advice please, does it need re-sealing or the unit changing ?

Stock image attached (not our van) with the light circled in red just to be clear about which unit is collecting water.

would really appreciate some instructions on what/how to remove and what sealant to use if sealing is all thats required?

Thanks,
Dave

I've never owned a recent Touring van but it strikes me as odd that the positioning light shown looks red all over. I thought UK rules about vehicle lights were that red should only show rearwards and white forwards. IIRC all our past vans had clear front lenses and a red rear half.

Not Dave's van as noted in the post. Reflection in van is a German number plate I think.

Attached are photos of my lights - both right and left side, they have lense covers that are half red and half clear.

It looks like there might by a slot to get a flat blade screwdriver into to prize off the lense cover. Do I prize off the lense cover and seal with something before popping the lense cover back into position, any ideas.

It's the left hand side one that's filling with water.

I've had a look at mine and they are the same design as yours. Your guess at a screwdriver blade to flick open sounds good, but I would wait for JohnE to come along as if anybody knows he will. If we are wrong I'd bet new lights could be £30.
I'm guessing once off you will find a small rubber gasket around the edge of the lens. A good clean in hot water might clean this up and soften it to make bedding in the lens more successful in getting a seal. I'd be tempted not to use a sealant as you would never be able to get into the thing again.

Yes, the lens will prise off, but be careful you don't send it flying as they're quite brittle.

This style of light is handed, ie part nos are different for offside and nearside, and to add insult to injury, the lenses aren't interchangeable.

They're not watertight but there's a drain slot at the bottom of the housing51Ai-9wEn-L._AC_SL1493_.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

The cable entry hole and fixing screws must be sealed to prevent water ingress to the inside of the caravan.

Thanks JohnE for your advice, very much appreciated. Which sealant would you recommend for the housing screws and cable entry hole?

I need to pull the caravan out from it's resting place at the side of the house to take a good look so might take a look at the weekend and check the drain hole is clear etc.

Please note the excellent advice from JohnE, particularly that the lens has a drain hole to stop it filling with water. This is common on many light fittings.

Sadly, some well meaning owners seal that hole as well making the situation worse.

Brilliant, thanks for the link Just_Chillin, if I need to replace the unit, or the lens, thats very handy, and cheap enough :-)

Would stil appreciate a heads up on the correct sealant to use for the housing screws and cable entry hole to avoid water ingress into the van ?

I have used Geocel Roofers Sealant from Screwfix for many years including several caravan jobs. https://www.screwfix.com/p/geocel-trade-...rey-310ml/72630 Please do not use silicon.

Thanks for all the advice guys, tackled this yesterday and all went smoothly.

The unit had been removed and refitted by previous owner or a dealer I think and the sealer had been applied behind the drain hole, effectively blocking the drain hole.

1. Removed the white/red lense cover carefully (using a flat blade screwdriver in the slot)
2. Could see the issue was that the unit has been off at some stage and sealer applied behind the drain hole, effectively blocking it
3. Removed fixing screws and carefully cut the sealer behind the unit with a swiss army knife (careful around wires)
4. Disconnected the wire spade connectors off the light unit connections, removed the unit from the caravan side, leaving the wires poking through the caravan side
5. Cleaned the dirt and old sealer off the caravan side with isopropanol alcohol.
6. Cleaned the old sealer off the back of the light unit, and cleaned with isopropanol.
7. Loosely fitted the light unit in popsition and applied masking tape around the unit on the caravan side.
8. Removed the light unit and applied Sika grey sealer to the side of the caravan and the light unit - NO SEALER APPLIED where the drain hole and lower section of the light unit is positioned.
9. pushed the light unit into position, squeezed more sealer into screw holes and pushed screws in and tightened into position, connected wire spade connectors onto light unit connections.
10. Re-fitted white/red lense into place, removed the masking tape.
11. cleaned very small amounts of excess sealer squeezed out around light fitting and side of caravan with isopropanol on an old rag.

Sorted, hopefully !

Thanks for all the advice, this is the sealer I used, thanks Just_Chilin
