Replacing the Truma Gas Heater with an Electric Convector Heater

WHY? Because we have hardly ever used our Truma and carry a 500w oil filled radiator for chilly weather.

I've put off considering it until I could find a suitable sized replacement. Easy to use and creates a lot of extra space in the wardrobe.

My thanks go to Mr Motters and the Eribanauts for giving me snippets of information in order to encourage me to go for it.

Taking the Truma out was not that difficult as it is screwed to the floor using 5 large self tappers (position indicated on picture 01).

You have to be a bit brutal when lifting it out of the floor as the gas connection pipe is fed through the large rectangular hole Picture 2.

The compression join is easily accessable through the hole in the floor.

The aluminium reflective surround and the Truma air fan were the next pieces to remove before taking away the chimney flue.

Next is to blank off the gas pipe. John England please look away now.

I purchased an 8mm blank end from Scewfix for the princely sum of £1.06 in the hope that I might be able to use it but unfortunately not. Therefore it was Plumbers Mate to the rescue (again) before capping off with the lead cork cover from a bottle of Rioja. I tied it off with copper wire which I later fed through the floor and fixed.

I cut a suitable 35mm thick piece of kitchen worktop to the shape of the large hole and hammered into place.

Then it was a case of filling in the opening with boarding and creating a new cubby hole behind for those extra bits and pieces. I had a piece of laminate which almost fitted perfectly but the grain was running the wrong way. The new heater would cover it eventually.

The heater arrived just as I had finished the preparatory work so fixing it was quite easy. I decided to pack it out on battens to keep it off the wall. Only job left to do now is to move an electric socket to the vicinity of the heater.

This is the heater I bought https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08XJXDWY3/r...7055811_TE_dp_1 (could have got it 6 quid cheater direct from the manufacturer )

My main concern now is whether the heat will affect the wardrobe door. It didn't with the Truma but I can't remember how much heat that gave off.

Super job. You will find the digital timer really useful. Our 500 watt heater with thermostat is plugged into a timer. I've set it to come on a couple of hours before we get up and run for an hour an hour or so after we go to bed.

I suppose if you have a power cut you can always suck an extra-strong mint, Roger.

I forgot to say that I used one of these https://www.primaleisure.com/product/102...ZBoCYyYQAvD_BwE I removed the chimney cowl and siliconed one of these on to stop rain coming down the chimney.

Our chimney cowl lid fell off when we were touring around a campsite in Greece two years ago. On our second circuit of the empty campsite there was a huge crunching noise as I ran over something.
I took a look at what I'd run over and it looked rather familiar but it was only after I noticed our chimney lid was missing that I twigged.

I had to remove all the broken bits and araldited the circular flat bit to the screw thread before screwing it back in place so it already has a sealed top.

Two things come to mind:-
1) Was that the cause of my rear tyre delaminating a few days later and a few miles up the road?
2) Should Aralditing in Greece be called Araldities, who is the Greek Goddess of Glue

Roger,
when we bought our 2006 Familia the original owners had the heater removed. The flue pipe was still in and it annoyed me, so out it came and I capped off the hole through the roof. I cut a disc of 4mm white acrylic, heated it in the over and draped it over a wooden block I had planed up to the same profile as the roof. I bonded this over the hole in the roof with white silicon as this sticks acrylic to grp fine. On the inside I screwed a slightly smaller disc. I cannot remember what I screwed into though, possibly a wooden block that was factory bonded to to the underside of the grp.

Oh look, new electric sockets. Brushed aluminium and shallow black back boxes. I've also created a new under locker space beneath the cross seat/single bed.
