Installing USB sockets

I hadn't really thought about this until just now, and it was seeing someone else's post about wiring in some USB sockets that did it.

I confess that I haven't looked really hard at USB sockets, but it does strike me that almost all the ones I've seen have been USB-A; i.e. the ones in which the rectangular plug will only fit one way round.

And because USB-C - the oval plug and socket which isn't handed like the A type - is gradually overtaking USB-A, I wonder, if you were to go to all the trouble of installing USB-As, a couple of years down the road you might find yourself in the very situation you were trying to avoid in the first place in having to use adaptors.

It's certainly the case in cars - no sooner do cars get USB-A sockets for plugging your rechargeable Wayfarers into than they're all being replaced with the C types and you have to go back to using the sun visor and squinting.

I appreciate all this stuff changes all the time as things move on, and doubtless USB-Cs will become redundant with the advent of neural wireless charging using nothing more than the power of your noggin, but maybe until then it might be an idea to hold off installing an array of soon-to-be redundant USB-A sockets and go back to a plug-in charger for the time being.

And you can always use a 240V socket for plugging an overpriced and weedy camping kettle into for a brew as well - in the proliferation of USB-powered gubbins I've never seen anything resembling a kettle; one which would take less than two weeks to get a teapot's worth of water above tepididity, at any rate.

Just like you I'm unsure of how quickly Technology changes, so although I'm not adverse to making holes in my Eriba I went the plug in adaptor route.
https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/koppla-3-po...white-40415031/ I leave it plugged into one of the front window ledge sockets all the time and at £6 it's a bargain. Still no use for a kettle though.

We just use a 4 plug socket/2 USB port Power Block which also doubles as a 1 metre extension something like this but cheaper in Lidl sbout 3 years ago..

Surely the standard USB power sockets are all USB A? All the power adapters I have had including car , pc, laptop, built in to 13A power sockets have this standard.
The usb powered appliance is then supplied with an appropriate adapter cable with USB A one end and then mini, micro or c at the other end.

I don't see the problem or have I misunderstood the original post?

That’s very neat but is it awkward having things dangling from the lights or do you have convenient shelves near your lights?

They are convenient in our Troll but in other cases extra long cables could be used and discretely routed.
2 or even 3 metre ones are available.

I invested in some long USB leads for charging at home, so I could sit in an armchair and still use a tablet whilst charging. Only downside was a degree of voltage drop which increased the charging time quite a bit.
I found an app called Ampere which monitors the charging rate and that was quite enlightening.

I have very short USB cables and find myself on my hands and knees using the tablet when charging :)

Indeed, there's a use for all the sets of leads, reducing back ache is another.

Did that light come with your van? And would it charge a USB when off grid?
