3 burner hob - plug 'ole

Our Triton had a 2 burner hob, our new old Troll 540 has a 3 burner hob - with a bath plug 'ole in the corner.

I don't think the hob is deep enough for goldfish, let alone for me or Jenny me to have a bath, I can't see me draining the asparagus down it???

Is it designed to work with some form of draining board with a sloping base and hole in one corner perhaps???

Any suggestions vaguely related - or indeed totally unrelated - welcome.

It's a bit like the overflow on a conventional sink in that a small corrugated tube links into the main waste pipe. If your pans boil over you can rinse the hob area down without fear of flooding the place. I used to put a drop of bleach down ours. New vans don't have them so I'm saving about 1p every two years on bleach.

Someone explained to me that the hob could serve as a draining rack if you were so ill-advised as to attempt to do any washing-up in the ludicrously small sink. It does work after a fashion but, if you’re fastidious, you still have to remove the burner grids to mop up puddles and wipe away water stains afterwards. A nice idea but …… We just put a tea towel on the hob lid.

Yes but the real bonus is that you can store the sink plug there when you don't want it in the sink, and never have to hunt for it again!

The people who advised us must have been very ill indeed, because we've managed to wash up in the sink quite successfully for years.

It isn't a big sink, so we don't use huge plates, king-sized utensils or expect to be able to scrub out the kind of cauldron they used to cook the beans in Blazing Saddles.

Everything inside these caravans is small. That's how they end up being small on the outside.

And anyway, there's something genuinely endearing about living in a cosy little space where the fridge and the cooker and the sinks and the taps and the light fittings and the cupboards and the toilet and even the front door are all child-sized.

Besides, we don't care overmuch for communal pot-washing at the campsite facilities. It's friendly and social, for sure, but if we're feeling neither friendly nor social it's a bit daft to have to watch through the curtains for a suitably-sized gap in the washing-up traffic when we can do it quite spontaneously in our own little tin snail.

Of course you have to be a bit less vigorous than you might be in your own kitchen sink at home, but we prefer to save our vigour for the games of naked Twister we enjoy with like-minded neighbours*

We wash up in the van too. Not up for naked Twister though, how do you find room in an Eriba to play that?

When I said like-minded people were very thin on the ground, I actually meant I hadn't come across any.

At all.

It's a mixture of bravado and an overactive imagination, really.

Truth be told I'm far too embarrassed to ask.

I had heard (from Mr Motters, as it happens) that the posh suntanned people with brand new trainers who live in motorhomes get up to that kind of thing behind their retractable blinds, but Mrs Pete would be mortified if I was caught peeking.

I like the sound of the naked twister. If I tick the underfloor heating option on a new Feeling [I'm sure there is a smutty message there] I could entertain the activity. The extra 170mm [of internal space] would also be welcome and help not getting anything caught in the bathroom door as it swings open.

It's the swinging shut you need to worry about...
